Openings: Usugrow & Toshikazu – “Oriental Elements” @ Backwoods Gallery

Usugrow and fellow Shinganist artist, Toshikazu Nozaka recently reprised  their 2-man show at Melbourne’s Backwoods Gallery. Usugrow has again created a few new drawings combining flowing lines, skulls, stipple and a self invented caligraphy, and is still able to incorporate them in a new way that keeps his work fresh and progressive. Along with the original ink drawings, he also debuted a few new prints of his recent work, as well as a few framed pieces of his caligraphy. Toshikaizu, who is tattoo artist of 20 years [...]

Set-up / Teasers: Retna – ‘The Hallelujah World Tour’ (London) @ The Dairy

Retna has been keeping himself busy recently — among other things, by participating in the Art in the Streets exhibition at MOCA, Street Cred at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, and painting the tail of a business jet in Geneva for VistaJet. He’s currently in the UK for the London limb of his Hallelujah World Tour which began in New York City in February (featured).  The pop-up event is being held at the Dairy, with the opening taking place on the evening of Wednesday [...]

James Marshall (aka Dalek) @ Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery (UAB)

After ten straight days of painting, albeit with the help of some university art students, Dalek (interviewed) has completed a massive four panel, site-specific installation within the Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery at the University of Alabama. With minimalism more reminiscent of his Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz (Part 1 & Part 2) exhibitions over the winter than some of his more traditional work, the street artist turn gallery veteran utilized simple geometric forms and subtle shades of blue to strong effect. On display through August [...]

Set-up / Openings: Brian Adam Douglas – ‘Due Date’ @ Black Rat Projects

The solo exhibition Due Date by Brian Adam Douglas (interviewed) opened on Thursday 9 March to a full house at London’s Black Rat Projects. Douglas himself was fine form throughout the evening, chatting with visitors and signing copies of his new book, Paper cuts, published by Drago. Among the guests, AM spotted artists Peter Kennard, Matt Small (interviewed) and Giles Walker. Also present was Douglas’s New York dealer, Andrew Edlin of Andrew Edlin Gallery, who’d flown in the day before to attend. Due Date consists [...]

Teaser / Setup: Armory Week ’11 – Jim Houser (Jonathan LeVine booth @ VOLTA)

Showing with Jonathan LeVine at the VOLTA satellite fair (also see Mark Jenkins & Richard Colman) at this year’s Armory Week will be Jim Houser. Judging from all the setup action we see, attendees can look forward to very nice installation which is typical for the Philadelphia-based artist (ie last year’s Subliminal Projects show).  AM loves his quilt-like blocks of imagery and look forward to seeing new symbology added to his lexicon.

Installation / Setup: Retna – “Hallelujah World Tour” (NYC)

After we ran into Retna (featured) at Mallick Williams & CO, he invited us over to hang at his upcoming show – The Hallelujah World Tour. The exhibition thrown by Valmorbida at a huge pop-up location in Manhattan will showcase a fresh body of work from the very busy street artist. Retna and crew were busy diligently prepping the space with floor to wall installations. If you liked his previous show in Miami during Basel Week, you’re going flip after seeing this new series, which [...]

Preview / Setup: David Bray – ‘Disasters of the 20th Century’ @ StolenSpace

AM called into StolenSpace yesterday to see how the installation of David Bray’s solo show Disasters of the 20th Century was coming together. We enjoy the variety of elements Bray uses within his work, often weaving a selection of found materials and ephemera into his drawings, both inside and out the frame. What we saw at the gallery was a slight departure from his previous work that we’ve seen. Disasters narrows the focus of the work into a series of more traditional drawn and rendered [...]

Teaser / Setup: Ellis G. – Permanently Temporary @ Mighty Tanaka

It looks like our friend Ellis Gallagher’s (interviewed) is setting up for his latest show Temporarily Permanent, a title that certainly describes the state of street art, especially when mostly done with chalk in his case. With this newest endeavor, Ellis is putting on a show in NYC again, with the first being at Collective Hardware in 2009. Head over to the Mighty Tanaka tomorrow night, January 21st, if you are interested because for the first time, original shadow & chalk drawings will be available [...]

Preview / Setup: Andrew Schoultz – “Melt Down” @ Project Space

Working efficiently in the wake of his solo a few months back, Compound Eyes of the World (covered), Andrew Schoultz is ready to reveal a new body of work tomorrow, December 9th at Project Space in Los Angeles. Opening at the collaborative gallery effort between Arkitip and Incase, Melt Down will call upon all of the San Francisco artist’s vast mixed-media talents. Centered around a massive tank installation and a series of giant wall murals, it appears Schoultz will be modernizing his imagery a bit, [...]
