Preview: “Urban Osmosis” @ Lopo and Space Gallery

It’s been a wonderful run for Spoke Art at Lopo Gallery, but just like 2010, it must come to an end.  Coincidentally, the opening of this final show will be on the ultimate day of the year.  Now-veteran curator Ken Harman presents a show featuring immersive site-specific installations, in three separate rooms, from new and established street and fine art artists.  They include Eddie Colla, Kelly Towles, D Young V, GATS, and the prolific Shark Toof. Ring in your new year surrounded by art and [...]

Openings: “Dreams Deferred” @ The Chinese American Museum

Last week, the Chinese American Museum (CAM) in Los Angeles opened their doors to an art show focused on immigration reform. Although the bulk of the problems the Chinese in America have had with this topic has been in the past, it is always important to bring light to some forgotten history as there is much we can learn that we can apply to the controversial topic in the present. Dreams Deferred (teased) featured many compelling pieces from some artists that you will be sure [...]

Openings: Sanrio 50th Anniversary Group Show

Last night at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Sanrio opened the doors to a tremendous 50th Anniversary celebration featuring carnival games, costumed characters, special food booths, limited edition event products from the company, and of course – a themed art group show (curated by JAPAN LA). Taking a cue from their Hello Kitty 35th birthday celebration last year (covered), the Japanese company chose a venue that could better accommodate the fanaticism that some have come associate with the brand’s ubiquitous kawaii characters. Although we [...]

Beyond Eden ‘10: Shark Toof – Installation @ LeBasse Projects

Shark Toof debuted his first ever solo show with Culver City’s LeBasse Projects at Beyond Eden this past weekend. The prolific street artist mounted a visual assault utilizing his array of signature imagery, including sharks, cigarette boxes, comics and monsters. Using materials such as wood, spray cans, boxes, found materials and books, the artist filled nearly the entire space with art work. One wall featuring giant panels of screen-printed swimming sharks over a collaged and painted background would have been even larger if not for [...]

Beyond Eden ’10: Shark Toof Installation

Beyond Eden is this weekend and from what we’ve seen, it looks to be one amazing event.  LeBasse Projects is one of the galleries participating in the 2-day fair and one of the artists they will be showing is Los Angeles’ own Shark Toof.  The hustling hometown hero, whose prolific work can be seen all around the streets of the city,  presents a large scale installation as well as a selection of pieces.  Come by this weekend and see his amazing work when the fair [...]
