Upcoming: Shawn Huckins – “Athenaeum (I Can’t Pretend That This Is Poetry)” @ Foster/White Gallery

Coming up on October 5th, Shawn Huckins (featured) will be presenting new work at the Foster/White Gallery in Seattle. Athenaeum (I Can’t Pretend That This Is Poetry) will feature paintings from his two series – The American Revolution Revolution and The American __tier – both which highlight his distinctive aesthetic of classical 18th- and 19th- century style portraits overlaid with text referencing unique social media speak and texting acronyms. With this juxtaposition of modern day verbiage and classic imagery, Huckins brings up the question of whether how we communicate governs the value of what we […]

Previews: Shawn Huckins – “Somewhere to Nowhere” @ Goodwin Fine Art

Following up on his show there last year (covered), Shawn Huckins (featured) will be opening Somewhere to Nowhere at Goodwin Fine Art on June 9th. The new distinctive text-based works are a response to his previous body of work where he overlaid today’s digital conversations (complete with abbreviations and mistakes) over scenes of traditional 18th and 19th century paintings. This time around, he uses phrases he finds from traditional pen and paper communications from a time when words seemed to be chosen more carefully and more meaningful and combined it with […]

Previews: Shawn Huckins – “Everything Is Hilarious And Nothing Is Real” @ Modernism Inc

Next month (May 5th) in San Francisco, Shawn Huckins (featured) will be opening a new solo at Modernism Inc entitled Everything Is Hilarious And Nothing Is Real. The title of the show is also the text used and part of the name of one of his instantly recognizable paintings that will be on display featuring the Denver-based artist’s on-going series of 19th-century American painting replications overlaid by the new grammar and language of social media. Huckin’s special form of satire forces us to examine the contrast of […]

Openings: Shawn Huckins – “The American _ _ tier” @ Goodwin Fine Art

AM was on hand for the April 17th opening reception of The American _ _ tier solo show from Shawn Huckins (see the recent studio visit here) at Goodwin Fine Art in Denver. There is an almost universal appeal to period specific portraits, as is evident in their prominence in museums and noteworthy collections. The real brilliance of Mr. Huckins’ work is adding a lighthearted element to this gorgeous portraiture, giving the viewer permission to enjoy a piece of work that without the addition of text could seem stuffy or overly serious, […]

Studio Visits: Shawn Huckins

When AM arrived at Shawn Huckins‘ studio in Denver’s trendy Lowry district, the paintings were finished, the oil dry and most already packed up and ready to send across town to Goodwin Fine Art for his solo show entitled American_tier opening April 17th (stay tuned for opening night coverage). Huckins is best known for his ability to engage viewers using classic style paintings of historical figures with overlaid text, the final piece being equal parts gorgeous portraiture and lighthearted humor. For each series, he has concentrated on a different period of […]

Take a look at some more photos below… Discuss this show here.

Openings: ‘Word Play’ @ Design Matters

A little while back we brought you a preview of some of the work for Word Play, hosted at Design Matters Gallery in Los Angeles. The premise of the exhibition excited us as the curated theme was based around text within art. The group exhibition was curated by Stephanie Chefas, of Platinum Cheese blog fame and features a variety of artists from very different backgrounds but all commonly using text in their work though a range of styles and mediums. Ben Venom (above), Shawn Huckins, Greg Lamarche, Gregory Siff, Meg Hitchcock, Meryl Pataky, and RERO all contributed […]
