Teaser: Kukula – “Sugar and Blood” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

Kukula is prepping for an upcoming show at Rome’s Dorothy Circus Gallery entitled “Sugar and Blood”, which opens on June 17th. Not since her last show “Immortal Artifacts” (previewed) have we seen her in a solo. For now, nibble on this little teaser… Discuss Kukula here.

Installation: Mike Shine @ SFMoMA

Following our studio visit with Mike Shine last week (here), AM headed down to San Francisco to check out the fruits of his recent labors for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary. Much as flotsam will accumulate in the ocean, creating a massive and no longer disjointed whole, the Mike Shine Show was part Fastelavn carnival, part three penny opera and part interactive installation. With carnival games and creepy clowns, Shine’s latest experience successfully brought back the fun and wonder of art to both parents and children alike, [...]

Installation: Barry McGee @ SFMoMA – A Closer Look

After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed).  Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works.  Arranged in a seemingly haphazard, though obviously well thought out manner, Twist’s install was literally bulging at the seams, seemingly so that one would assume it was on the cusp of giving birth or expelling a whole new body of [...]

Openings: Morgan Slade – “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” @ Shooting Gallery

Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas. After photographing his models, Slade hand-distresses and [...]

Openings: Audrey Kawasaki – “Hajimari – a prelude” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

When hype is built up, rarely does the show ever meet the expectations. Once in a blue moon does one actually surpass the expectations – which is exactly what this show did. Audrey Kawasaki opened up her much anticipated body of work “Hajimari – a prelude” (previewed) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery last weekend in New York City. The sold-out show drew a max capacity crowd that overflowed from the packed gallery space into the adjacent hallways. There were three lines going the whole night – one to get [...]

Openings: Sashie Masakatsu – “De Facto Standard” @ Mizuma Gallery

Mizuma Gallery recently hosted the opening of Masakatsu Sashie’s latest body of work “De Facto Standard.” As mentioned in our preview, Sashie isn’t just content with his success using his spherical motifs. He seeks to redefine the mold of success with larger canvas sizes and unique “shapes” we have not yet seen from the young artist. From ginormous wall size canvases to a few select smaller pieces sporting some unseen before designs, Sashie is definitely going for the “less is more” approach with only six high quality paintings [...]

Preview: Sashie Masakatsu – “De Facto Standard” @ Mizuma Gallery

Masakatsu Sashie is preparing to show back at his home country of Japan at Mizuma Galley after a recent show in LA. Opening this Saturday, November 26th, the show will run until the day after Christmas. We expect his signature urban orbs floating over ominous landscapes, but as the title of the show also hints at, Sashie is not merely content with having his art meet some arbitrary “De Facto Standard.” He seeks to push his talents to another level. This latest body of work also [...]

Showing: JR – “Women Are Heroes” (Nuit Blanche – Paris)

AM stopped by the Nuit Blanche festival in Paris and got to catch the tail end of JR and crew wheat pasting their ginormous photo installations for his “Women are Heroes” (previewed) show which is part of his 28 Millimetre project (We were wondering how he got to the lower parts of the bridges). We also took in the city via boat to tour the streets to enjoy the photographic installations that graced many parts of the “City of Love.” As mentioned previously, this phase [...]

Baby Tattooville 09: Orientation Dinner and “Duets”

Today will mark the official start of Baby Tattooville (BT), but the artists all arrived last night at the resort. All meticulously planned events of this scale requires an orientation and AM was honored have the opportunity to treat the artist team to dinner as they prepped for their big weekend at BT. After a hearty meal, the the artists took out the tools of their trade and teamed up to create what we would like to call “Duets.” “Duets” are the exclusive original artwork [...]
