Baby Tattooville ’11: “Baby Tattooville On Parade” @ Riverside Art Museum

Time flies… This year’s Baby Tattooville (see our 2009 and 2010 coverage) is creeping up on us and will go down the weekend of October 7-9. Scheduled as a reunion of sorts, much of the alumni will be returning so those attending will be surrounded by an even larger contingent of artists. Teaser: Kukula – “Sugar and Blood” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

Following our studio visit with Mike Shine last week (here), AM headed down to San Francisco to check out the fruits of his recent labors for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary. Much as flotsam will accumulate in the ocean, creating a massive and no longer disjointed whole, the Mike Shine Show was part Fastelavn carnival, part three penny opera and part interactive installation. After visiting Mike Shine’s outdoor carnival for SFMoMA‘s 75th Anniversary, AM ducked inside to catch one last look at Barry McGee’s massive clustered installation (previewed). Consisting of hundreds of drawings, personal pictures and patented patterns, McGee’s exhibit truly conveyed the multi-faceted breadth of his works. Morgan Slade opened his new show, “Fist of Fear, Touch of Death” last weekend at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery. Featuring ten new large scale photographs, Morgan’s latest body of work is most striking and provided a great introduction of his work to the Bay Area. His subjects, faceless models donning football helmets, stormtrooper masks, and mascot heads, pose playfully though it’s their anonymity and resulting lack of true beauty that perhaps grants such freedoms as modern day morettas. When hype is built up, rarely does the show ever meet the expectations. Once in a blue moon does one actually surpass the expectations – which is exactly what this show did. Mizuma Gallery recently hosted the opening of Masakatsu Sashie’s latest body of work “De Facto Standard.” As mentioned in our preview, Sashie isn’t just content with his success using his spherical motifs. He seeks to redefine the mold of success with larger canvas sizes and unique “shapes” we have not yet seen from the young artist. Masakatsu Sashie is preparing to show back at his home country of Japan at Mizuma Galley after a recent show in LA. AM stopped by the Nuit Blanche festival in Paris and got to catch the tail end of JR and crew wheat pasting their ginormous photo installations for his “Women are Heroes” (previewed) show which is part of his 28 Millimetre project (We were wondering how he got to the lower parts of the bridges). Today will mark the official start of Baby Tattooville (BT), but the artists all arrived last night at the resort.
