Previews: Jaune & Slinkachu – “Trash Talk” @ Thinkspace

Tomorrow night (June 1st) in Los Angeles, Thinkspace will be opening a special exhibition from two street artists known to work on the miniature scale. Entitled Trash Talk, the joint exhibition will feature work from both Beligum’s Jaune and UK-based Slinkachu. Known for his clever sculptural interventions with his subjects interacting with everyday objects from a different “Honey I Shrunk The Kids” perspective, Slinkachu has made the transition to indoor work easily by presenting his work as tiny dioramas. His work often has dark undertones so this contrasts […]

Upcoming: Paul Insect – “There’s More Upstairs” @ Allouche Gallery (Paris Popup)

Tonight in Paris, Allouche Gallery is hosting a popup exhibition from Paul Insect entitled There’s More Upstairs. The British artist’s work walks the line between old and new, influenced by Dadaist aesthetics while at the same time tackling more modern issues like the effects of social media. His latest set of mixed media works feature his signature hand-painted eyes, created with a rich ombre of color, forming the focal point to his masked portraiture. Released in conjunction with the show was a new limited edition print (available in gallery […]

Last weekend in Detroit, imagery from REVOK’s Spirograph & Tape Loops series enveloped a series of musical performances creating a truly immersive experience for the audience. Previews: Shawn Huckins – “Staring At The Sun” @ Foster/White Gallery

On June 6th, Foster/White Gallery in Seattle will be presenting a new show from Shawn Huckins (featured) entitled Staring At The Sun. Featuring two distinct bodies of work that share references to American paintings from The White House Art Collection as well as those held in prestigious museums nationwide, the work is a reflection of how the Denver-based artist sees politics in our currently divided country. The Erasures series features replicas of historical paintings superimposed by the familiar gray and white checkered pattern signifying where a software’s ‘eraser’ tool has […]

Recap: Aron Wiesenfeld – “Natural Selection” @ Arcadia Gallery

This last weekend, the hauntingly beautiful Aron Wiesenfeld show at Arcadia Contemporary closed its two week run. Natural Selection featured a new body of work from the San Diego-based artist, rendered expertly as usual and steeped with an air of mystery. His characters are typically portrayed by themselves in a desolate, dark setting or perhaps in some expansive natural environment where the viewer is drawn into some suspenseful narrative that they aren’t quite sure of. There is a feeling of not-quite-rightness and an atmospheric tension to each piece […]

Upcoming: Javier Calleja – “Clouds Through The Window” @ Galerie Zink

Returning to Galerie Zink in Germany less than a year since his last solo (covered) with the gallery, Javier Calleja has prepared a new body of work for a show opening on May 26th. Entitled Clouds Through The Window, the new exhibition features the majority of the Spanish artist’s fresh output arranged on one wall like an old cabinet of curiosities. Nine paintings of different scales featuring the Nara protege’s cartoonish portraiture dominate one side in the middle of the space, further accented by custom frames created by a carver […]

Upcoming: Erik Jones – “Country” @ Hashimoto Contemporary (New York)

Coming up next month, Hashimoto Contemporary’s New York space will be hosting a solo showing from Erik Jones entitled Country. Judging from the work-in-progress photos from his studio outside of Chicago, the new body of work will continue his recent series of surreal portraits that treat the extremities and appendages like colorful Gumby-like extensions of the body. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss Erik Jones here.

Showing: Do Ho Suh @ Museum Voorlinden

Museum Voorlinden recently opened Do Ho Suh’s first solo institutional show in the Netherlands, an expansive body on work anchored with a series of the mesh architectural installations that the Korean artist is known for. Along with these ethereal fabric replicas of his former homes in South Korea, New York, Berlin, and London, the exhibition also includes scale models, photography, drawings, and videos. While ideas of space and identity have always played central roles in his practice, his immigration to the United States as well as his travels have […]

Showing: Josh Tiessen – “Streams in the Wasteland” @ Jonathan LeVine Projects

Currently at Jonathan Levine Projects, a solo show is on view from Josh Tiessen, first place winner of the inaugural Delusional Art Competition that the gallery held in 2017 (covered). Inspired the prophetic literature of the Hebrew Bible, Streams in the Wasteland features works painted on irregularly shaped panels centered thematically on depicting wild animals in abandoned spaces. Tiessen further explains – “the symbolic natural imagery offers streams of hope within the post-apocalyptic wasteland, highlighting the God-given mandate of stewardship to care for animals and the environment, which is […]

Showing: KAWS – “ALONE AGAIN” @ Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

A couple weekends ago, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (with support from Library Street Collective) opened a new show from art superstar KAWS. Entitled ALONE AGAIN, the exhibition features five large scale companion sculptures and three paintings displayed on a special mural painted by the Brooklyn-based artist. Utilizing his signature bold colors and abstracted pop imagery, the paintings really stand out against the 62-foot black and white snoopy-esque backdrop. This wall also contrasts nicely with the dark FINAL DAYS, SMALL LIE, ALONG THE WAY, BETTER KNOWING, and AT THIS TIME […]
