Streets: Andrew Hem // UPEART (Finland)

Recently in Oulu, Finland, Andrew Hem (interviewed) completed by far the hardest mural he’s ever painted due to the challenging texture of the wall. Created for multi-city UPEA street art festival, Crystal Blue from the American artist has a pixelated feel to it due to the tiny rocks on the surface of the wall. Using masterful gradients of of red and orange in the background, the stunning piece really stands out from the surroundings. Previews: “Lush Life 6” @ Roq La Rue

Tonight in Seattle, Roq La Rue celebrated their re-opening after a two year hiatus with a group show entitled Lush Life 6. Like the previous iterations of the exhibition, artists were free to interpret the theme as they saw fit. Participants this year included Camille Rose Garcia, Josie Morway, Lola Gil, Casey Curran, Kazuki Takamatsu, Brandi Milne, Bella Ormseth (seen above and below), Sarah Leea Petkus, Rebecca Chaperon, Kai Carpenter, and Kari-Lise Alexander. On October 13th, Tales Of Art Gallery in Imola, Italy will be opening a group show curated by Sasha Bogojev entitled Universes. The eclectic roster of artists have diverse range of artistic practice and mark-making but all share an interest in rendering the surreal and figurative. This Thursday, October 11th, The Hole in NYC will be opening a new show from Jonathan Chapline. Entitled Material Memory, the exhibition will highlight the Brooklyn-based artist’s melding of digital and traditional techniques to create pieces with a unique aesthetic. Each work typically begins with some simple line drawings which he then fleshes out on the computer into more complex compositions with shading and color gradients. Banksy Painting Shreds Itself After Selling At Sotheby’s

The genius of Banksy was on display again Friday night in London when his iconic Girl Red Balloon sold for a record £953,829. Right after the hammer, the piece from the British artist ran through what appeared to be a remotely activated shredder hidden in the unusually thick frame, leaving half of the work hanging from the bottom in strips.
