Openings: Mel Kadel – “Stuck On A Wave” @ Merry Karnowsky

Last Saturday night, Mel Kadel unveiled new works for her Stuck On A Wave solo during an opening reception at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Showing alongside the cosmic and pattered work of Mark Whalen, the Los Angeles-based Kadel’s imagery also featured patterns of her own, oftentimes backdrops of collaged repeating elements for her characters to play in. As referenced by the title of the show, this time around, the auto-biographical caricatures of herself were seen at times rowing through the patterns as if they were on water. The show will […]

Showing: Anish Kapoor @ Lisson Gallery

Currently at the two locations of the Lisson Gallery in London, Anish Kapoor has gathered a comprehensive collection of his recent works for a showing that will run through November 10th. Known for his brightly colored and large-scale mirror-like creations, the Indian-born British sculptor has chosen to also focus on another side of his repertoire for this exhibition with a selection of his earth works in varied compositions. Rounding things out nicely in Lisson’s sculpture yard is Intersection, a piece from Kapoor fabricated from steel that almost […]

Setup: Ryan Travis Christian – “The Second Banana” @ Guerrero Gallery

Ryan Travis Christian has been busy preparing for his The Second Banana exhibition opening tonight over at Guerrero Gallery. His latest solo show incorporates painting, sculpture, video and some massive instillation. From what we have seen, this work dives, not only deeper into the the finer things in life we all enjoy such as the love of a childhood sports, but also goes as far as exploring the more tabu subjects found within general mainstream society just under the surface. Normally lighter illustration based pieces seem to […]

Videos / Set Up: Mark Whalen – “Portals” @ Merry Karnowsky

Tomorrow night, Mark Whalen (featured) will be unveiling all new works at the Merry Karnowksy Gallery. Entitled Portals, the name certainly can be descriptive of the imagery seen in his paintings – strange beings that look like they might have appeared through doorways into another dimension or world. Whalen has come a long way since his days as a Sydney based street artist known as Kill Pixie, and this return to the Los Angeles showspace sees him further explore what we saw from him at last year’s exhibition there […]

Openings: Todd “REAS” James – “Free To be You & Me” @ V1 Gallery (Part II)

Earlier this week, we shared some photos of the paintings from the current Todd James (aka REAS) exhibition, Free To be You & Me, at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen. Along with these works, the NY-based artist also created an installation of what he imagines to be the Vandal’s Bedroom , chock full of drawings and other ephemera that very well could represent James’ bedroom at one point in time. Street art fans who were lucky enough to have visited the historic Art In The Streets exhibition at the MOCA in Los Angeles may recognized […]

The show contained 24 paintings, each capturing a moment from a different location from a different hour of the day.
