Preview: Mia Araujo – “The Secret Keepers” @ Roq La Rue Gallery

Rounding out Roq La Rue’s two-person exhibition this weekend, showing alongside Brian Despain’s Tin Machines and Mercuric Dreams (previewed), will be popsurrealist Mia (interviewed). The show will provide the Los Angeles-based artist’s first opportunity since last fall’s three-person show at Corey Helford Gallery (covered) to unveil a new body of work. With the female form taking center stage in often fantastical scenarios, The Secret Keepers will give the artist a chance to continue telling her story. Check out a preview after the jump.

Openings: Elbow-Toe – “Due Date” @ Warrington Museum

Last December, Brooklyn-based Elbow-Toe (interviewed) took his wonderful “cut paper paintings” to the Warrington Museum in the UK. Due Date, billed to be his first solo showing across the pond, explores his “preconceived notions of parenthood and the opportunities for growth that come through that process.” Featuring a set of images on panels and a set of images on paper, each series provides a contrast between staged environments and stark isolation. Make sure you stop by before February 19th to check out the intricately collaged […]

Teaser: “Pens and Needles” @ London Miles

Coming up later this month, February 25th to be exact, the London Miles Gallery will be hosting a group show based thematically on tattoos and their associated paraphernalia. Entitled “Pens and Needles”, the exhibition will feature photographs, original stencils from tattoos, paintings and live tattooing and includes artist (fine art and tattoo artists) Shawn Barber, Estevan Oriol, and Tom Bagshaw. It certainly sounds like a night for good art, especially if you are into the culture.

Update: Josh Keyes – “The Magician’s Garden” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

To build the anticipation for The Magicians Garden a little further, here is a snapshot from Josh Keyes’ studio, where he appears to have fully fleshed out the painting that we teased last month in its conceptual phase. Although it’s presumed that this show will be on the smaller side due to the spatial constraints of the gallery, Josh clearly is putting his all into the handful of works that will be exhibited, especially this one which looks to yet again continue the trend of […]

Openings: Pema Rinzin – “Compassion Transformed” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week saw the opening of Tibetan master painter Pema Rinzin’s first New York solo show Compassion Transformed at the Joshua Liner Gallery, and the sizable crowd in attendance couldn’t have been more impressed with what they saw. The entire gallery was filled with a varied yet consistent body of abstract paintings on canvas and paper, each exploding with vibrant colors and detailed patterns that must be experienced in person to be fully appreciated. Rinzin’s work comprised several groups of paintings: from the Peace and […]

Openings: “Suggestivism” @ GCAC

Last night, we attended the opening for Suggestivism, curated by Nathan Spoor, at Grand Central Art Center. This ambitious group show of over 50 different works boasts an impressive lineup of artists including Ron English, Todd Schorr and Sandow Birk. The exhibition reads like a collection of loose narratives, and the experience of each piece is like walking into the middle of a story, allowing the imagination to dictate the beginning and end. The artwork is meticulously rendered with an ambiguous, open-ended suggestion, allowing the […]

Installation / Setup: Retna – “Hallelujah World Tour” (NYC)

After we ran into Retna (featured) at Mallick Williams & CO, he invited us over to hang at his upcoming show – The Hallelujah World Tour. The exhibition thrown by Valmorbida at a huge pop-up location in Manhattan will showcase a fresh body of work from the very busy street artist. Retna and crew were busy diligently prepping the space with floor to wall installations. If you liked his previous show in Miami during Basel Week, you’re going flip after seeing this new series, which […]

Teaser: Sas & Colin Christian @ Opera Gallery (NY)

Husband and and wife duo, Colin & Sas Christian (interviewed), return to the Opera Gallery in March, this time in New York. After a strong homecoming of sorts last February in London with a show entitled Inner Space (covered), they are again collaboratively creating a new body of work. Take a look at the first fruits of their labor with this piece entitled Eclipse, fashioned from fiberglass and silicone, and measuring four feet tall. Keep your eyes on AM as we’ll have more to follow […]

Openings: Insa – “More” @ Fifty24SF

Fifty24SF opened its doors to London-based artist Insa’s exhibition last Thursday night in San Francisco. During the week leading up to this event, Insa was busy painting up the town as well as filling up the gallery with paint fumes during the creation of his amazing stop motion video installation. The show included spray paint works on plexiglass (some of which incorporated moving parts and LEDs), prints featuring his signature motif, a sculpture, as well as photography featuring his work with beautiful women. See more […]
