Preview: “Suggestivism” @ GCAC

Coming hot off the heels of Joe Sorren’s (featured) epic retrospective at the gallery, Suggestivism, a group exhibition curated by Nathan Spoor, opens this Saturday at CSUF Grand Central Art Center. It features over 50 different works (old and new) that embody Suggestivism, a term first used in the late nineteenth century describing an organic process of art making that suggests an ambiguous narrative. The exhibition features artists who illustrate ideas or subjects whose relationships point towards a loose and open narrative, constructed by the […]

Preview: David Ellis – “Mola Salsa” @ New Image Art

This Saturday night, the versatile and multi-talented David Ellis brings a new body of work “Mola Salsa” to New Image Art. No word yet whether his popular “trash sound sculptures” or video work will be making their appearance at the West Hollywood gallery, but here are some preview images of some of the paintings for your enjoyment. It seems like his work has taken a more figurative turn.

Openings: Kenny Scharf – “Naturafutura” @ Paul Kasmin Gallery

On Thursday night, AM attended the double feature opening for Kenny Scharf at Paul Kasmin’s two galleries – the project space hosted Three Dozen (more on that soon), while in the primary space, Naturafutura was a showcase for numerous large scale paintings which drew inspiration from Kenny’s bi-coastal studio in Bahia, Brazil. The vibrant colors and subjects reflect this unique zone where lush jungles meet the warm tropical waters. You may also remember this bright color palette and style from his recent mural on the corner […]

Preview: ‘A’ – Steve More & Remi/Rough @ Blackall Studios, London

AM recently brought you a view from both Steve More and Remi/Rough’s respective studios here and here in the run up to their collaborative exhibition entitled A, which opens on Tuesday 1st February at London’s Blackall Studios, and we thought it would be apt to bring a reminder of the show with a preview of a few of the works from each of the artists. A is an entirely self funded affair, and and you can read some of Remi’s thoughts on putting such an […]

Showing: Part2ism – ‘A Retrospective 1995-2011’ @ Bar Lane Studios, York

It’s not often that AM gets to report on exhibitions in York, but this is one show that was always destined to happen. Part2ism, or Part2 for you old school graf-heads, is currently showing a retrospective of his work in his home town of York at Bar Lane Studios located just inside the city walls. Spanning the years from 1995 until the present, this body of work shows the journey that Keith Hopewell has taken since some of his first outings on canvas, as opposed […]

As you will see, his new body of work looks more mature and rich in content as well as some pieces taking his imagery in a new direction. More opening pics after the jump…

LA Art Show: Murals from Andrew Hem, Chor Boogie, and Shark Toof

For several days while the Los Angeles Art Show was in town, Andrew Hem’s (interviewed), Chor Boogie, and Shark Toof were hard at work working on some large mural pieces. Interested attendees were treated to some extended live painting as each artist worked on some signature imagery for their enjoyment. Mr. Shark Toof and Chor Boogie have been especially busy as they also did work for the Patron After Party if your remember (covered). More photos courtesy of Brandon Shigeta after the jump…
