SDCC ’10: Costumes and Characters

Part of the immersive Comic Con experience for many is dressing up as their favorite character (or just one they strongly resemble) or interacting with and watching others in costume. It’s like the best organized Halloween party ever. Many attendees really go all out with some fantastic get-ups. They all help make the SDCC experience memorable and provide some wonderful photo opportunities. Check out our selection of them after the jump…

Last night, the PRISM gallery on the Sunset Strip hosted a group exhibition “Come As You Are” in conjunction with New Image Art and RVCA. In particular, we liked the pieces by Os Gemeos […]

Preview: Jonathan LeVine Gallery – “Annual Summer Invitational”

The cool thing about the “Annual Summer Invitational” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery is that we get to see some fresh faces that haven’t had an opportunity to grace the gallery walls before. As mentioned earlier, this year’s lineup looks promising with many faces familiar to AM readers taking stage with brand new works. Artists such as Nicoletta Ceccoli (interviewed), Tran Nguyen, Alex McLeod, Andrew Hem (interviewed), Becca Midwood, Evol, Judith Supine, Lola (featured), Morgan Slade, Marco Mazzoni, Nate Frizzell (featured), Oliver Warden and Oscar de las Flores […]

SDCC ’10: Sculptures, Toys, and Figures

As we previewed prior to Comic Con, the weekend event featured the unveiling of some fantastic sculptures and figures by artists we all know and love, including those by Jeff Soto, Travis Louie, David Choe, Shepard Fairey, Yoskay Yamamoto, and Luke Chueh. SDCC was your opportunity to nab exclusive pieces, like the Ghost Seeker and a rare colorway of Mr. Spray. It is always great to see and be able to purchase three-dimensional artwork and these editions were affordable enough for almost any fan. See […]

Preview: Junko Mizuno, Aiko, and Samuel Lowder – “Vivid Fiction” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

This Saturday, July 31, Merry Karnowsky Gallery will be hosting a new show, “Vivid Fiction,” a joint venture between artists Junko Mizuno, Aiko, and Samuel Lowder aka FrePrs. Although it seems to be a somewhat discordant grouping, each artist has something to offer to those that attend. Aiko Nakagawa, formerly part of the  Faile (featured), continues to develop her own imagery and style, showing a feminine touch that has been missing from the Brooklyn collective since she left. Junko Mizuno will be bringing her unique […]

Showing: George Lucas’ & Steven Spielberg’s Norman Rockwell Collection @ Smithsonian

So, it turns out that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have a vast collection of original Norman Rockwell paintings and drawings. Luckily for us, they are willing to share these iconic pieces with the public in the form of an exhibition, “Telling Stories”, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibition, highlighting the connections between the master storyteller with American life and the movies, opened earlier this month and will continue into Janurary 2011. More examples of the 57 works on display […]

Streets: Sam3 for Insitu Festival (Spain)

After doing some good work for this year’s Fame Festival, Sam3 moves on to another gathering of street artists, this time in Spain. The new Insitu Festival (see Escif’s piece), the brainchild of Madrid artist San, was held in walled city of Cáceres, Spain – a city known for their stork’s nests of all things. When taken in that context, this beautiful piece from the master of the silhouettes begins to make more sense. A closer look at this mural after the jump, as well […]

Teaser: Eric Joyner – “Donut Logic” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Robots and donuts – a perfect combination that has worked for year after year, show after show – who knew? Of course, we are talking about the work of Eric Joyner, who will be opening a new solo show – “Donut Logic” at Corey Helford Gallery in August. Often locked in epic battles or involved in unlikely scenes where the protagonists and antagonists have been been replaced by tin robots and donuts of various shapes and sizes, Joyner’s characters are painted with a sort of […]
