Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works” @ Tomio Koyama Gallery

Yoshitomo Nara unveiled a new series of works at Japan’s Tomio Koyama Gallery yesterday. As we mentioned earlier, Nara has been very busy honing his talents on this new medium for over a year at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. The results of his hard work clearly showed in his 20 or so ceramic sculptures both large and small in scale. Of course, what would a Nara show be without some of his signature drawings. It’s very exciting when an artist explore a new medium outside […]

Openings: Matt Leines – “These Songs Are True” @ Guerrero Gallery

Guerrero Gallery held it down with a cool series of work from Matt Leines that showed in their space starting last week. Opening along side Alex Lukas (covered), Matt’s latest show “These Songs Are True” took us to his imagined world where cultural elements are mixed with pseudo historical references to create a society of crazy human-esqe characters. Colorful masks or faces stare back at you with geometric shapes and colors forming fascinating environments. Check it out after the jump.

Video / Teaser: Os Gemeos @ Museu Colecção Berardo

Sounds like Lisbon has some street artists visiting in the next several months with some pretty exciting things planned.  First up are the Brazilian duo Os Gemeos and their show opening up on Monday, May 17th, at the Museu Colecção Berardo. After touring major museums in their home country (here, here, and here), the twins have set their sites on Portugal for their next museum exhibition, this time entitled Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá’ (To who lives there, heaven is there). Seen above […]

Preview: “Small Victories” @ Above Second Gallery

Remember when we told you about a photography show in Hong Kong put on by Booooooom that was taking submissions? Hopefully some of our readers took advantage because the show will be opening next Thursday, May 20th, at the Above Second Gallery (6-10pm). The exhibition is described as “a photographic celebration of the quietly beautiful, unintentionally funny, people and things all around us. It is these little moments that make life worth living. The work in the show consists entirely of 4×6 photographs, the small […]

An eclectic art show and event, Aftershock LA, organized by Cafe Mode, is set to open tonight, May 15th at the Royal/T Cafe. The benefit (tickets $25 at the door) is put on to help raise money for Build Change, an international non-profit that designs earthquake-resistant house in developing countries and trains people to build them. Teaser: Herakut @ Gallery Springmann.Varol

After getting off to a great start by holding a grand opening show with French sensation JR (covered), Galerie Springmann.Varol follows it up with another stellar choice – Herakut (interviewed). Although we just got a taste of their recent work, we are looking forward to this solo exhibition by the German street art duo. We’ll have more to follow as we draw closer to the opening on June 11th. Discuss Herakut here.

Openings: “Art From The New World” @ Bristol City Museum

Our friends from the Corey Helford Gallery brought their West Coast Style to the West Country this evening for the much anticipated opening of “Art From The New World” at the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery. It seemed as though UK art fans were highly responsive to some of the wonderful work on show at the preview night, with a packed house drawing in the crowd from the length and breadth of the United Kingdom. Some real visual treats are on offer, from the […]

Teaser: “The Next Generation” @ London Miles Gallery (Curated by Thinkspace)

With the opening of Corey Helford’s “Art From The New World” set to open this weekend in the Bristol (full coverage to follow), we look towards a show with similar goals coming up next month. “The Next Generation”, curated by Thinkspace, seeks to further promote a new breed of contemporary artists to the UK audience. The show will open on June 11th at the London Miles Gallery and will feature 12″ x 12″ pieces from each participant. One of the artists scheduled as part of […]

Update: Gaia

Haven’t heard from Gaia in while ever since hanging out a little at Art Basel Miami last year, but it looks like he’s participating in two shows in the next couple weeks. First up is a solo at Gallery Heist opening tomorrow night in SF (of which there are some preview pics after the jump). Then, on May 23rd, he’ll be part of the Axis Alley Project in Baltimore for which he put up this sick mural of his “Deny Him Three Times” image – it blends […]

Update: Conor Harrington

According to his blog, it looks like Conor Harrington (interviewed) is in the Middle East somewhere working on a new project doing what he does best – big complex murals (seen above)! Hopefully we’ll see some of this in Los Angeles as Conor JR, Vhils, and Antony Micallef (interviewed) have next at the Lazarides popup space following the mindblowing David Choe show.  We’ll have more to follow on this soon… Discuss Conor Harrington here.
