Showing: Amy Ross – “Brother Wolf” @ Steven Zevitas Gallery

Amy Ross recently opened what sounds to be a deeply personal show. “Brother Wolf”, in Boston at the Steven Zevitas Gallery. Although most readers may be more familiar with her previous work with her signature blending of the plant and animal kingdoms, Ross has chosen to take this new set of paintings in a new direction. Because of her strong anti-war views, she has struggled with the fact that her brother is in the military. Moved by her siblings photos of his recent tours of […]

Last month, we gave you a little teaser of Tomokazu “Matsu” Matsuyama’s (interviewed) west coast solo at Frey Norris. Now, we bring you an exclusive studio visit & sneak peek into some of the mind boggling pieces that will grace the gallery walls come this Thursday, February 4th (6pm-8pm). As you can clearly see from the latest incarnation of his iconic “Runnin’ Deep” imagery, he’s going for the gusto. With bolder colors and even bolder compositions, this is one of the shows that we’re looking forward to […]

Roa shows in Cologne & Paris

Up-and-coming Belgium-based street artist Roa had a show open last weekend (running until March 13th) in Germany at the ArtyFarty Gallery. As you can see in the picture above, he also found time to get up some pieces in and around the streets of Cologne. He will also no doubt do the same in Paris if he plans on attending his show opening there this Thursday, February 4th, at Galerie Itinerrance. Roa’s has made his name by wandering the streets of Europe putting up large-scale […]

Art Los Angeles Contemporary Fair 2010

For one 4-day weekend, the spectacular Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood was the site of the first ever Art Los Angeles Contemporary, which took place January 28-31.  Almost every top gallery in Los Angeles and a few from around the world participated in the event, showing new works from emerging to internationally-recognized blue chip artists.  In addition to the exhibitors, the fair also hosted a series of special programming throughout Los Angeles, including artist lectures, panels, events and film screenings.  Of course, AM was […]

Studio Visits: David Choe

AM swung by David Choe’s satellite studio for a visit as the artist was preparing for his upcoming show at  FIFTY24SF.  Choe, who lives and works in New York City, has deep roots with both Los Angeles and the Bay Area and has maintained a makeshift studio a half hour south of San Francisco for the past two years.  Part recording studio, part screen print press, this live/work space provides the ideal creative getaway for the ever traveling artist.  David opened his doors for a […]

Video: Doze Green – “New Works” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

A video came out recently that walks through the Doze Green show (covered) that is currently showing at the Jonathan Levine Gallery. Monotonous documentary lady voice notwithstanding, the video highlights the otherworldly and stylized work from the old school street artist, especially the vibrancy of his color pieces. Discuss Doze Green here. Via Vandalog.

Openings: Alex Prager – “Week-end” @ Yancey Richardson and M+B

Alex Prager’s third installment of her trilogy on Valley life, “Week-End” opens today, January 30th, in Los Angeles at M+B Gallery while the New York showing at Yancey Richardson will continue till the 20th of February.  Whereas her two previous shows, “Polyester” and “The Big Valley” respectively presented the glamor of vintage suburban life and it’s gradual deterioration, “Week-End” is a dark look into the lives of her subjects as their world finally unfurls.  In a style reminiscent of Cindy Sherman mixed with a color […]

Teaser: Sarah Joncas – “Shadow Play” @ Roq La Rue

Canadian artist Sarah Joncas will be opening a show next month (February 12th) in Seattle at the Roq La Rue Gallery. It sounds like her new body of work will deal with the idea of shadows, either imprinted onto the character or created by the character themselves and will be appropriately named “Shadow Play”. She will be showing alongside French artist Ciou – take a look at a show card after the jump…

Streets: Jef Aerosol

Famed French street artist Jef Aerosol is set to open his debut New York solo show “All Shook Up” tonight at Ad Hoc Art.  Look for brand new stenciled works as well as classic pieces on paper, wood, and found objects. Of course, as is custom with his “trade,” he set about getting up pieces all around town to coincide with the exhibition. Take a look at several other pics after the jump at all the street work which of course include his iconic red […]

Teaser: Jonathan LeVine Five Year Anniversary Group Show

James Jean (interviewed) recently posted up images of two small paintings (12″ x 12″) for the upcoming Jonathan LeVine Five Year Anniversary Group Show. The two pieces are beautiful although disturbing as they feature shoemakers, but also what appear to be children – bringing up thoughts of child labor (one of them seen smoking). An intriguing start to a show we are naturally excited about, considering the pedigree of artist that has come through the LeVine gallery through the years. It opens on February 27th […]
