Preview: Kukula – “Immortal Artifacts” @ Corey Helford

Our friends over at the Corey Helford Gallery sent over some preview pics for Kukula’s upcoming show opening this weekend. From the looks of things, cultural artifacts from music and the arts was chosen as one of the themes of this new body of work (painted over the course of 10 months). Kukula says – “the paintings in this exhibition try to hint at the obscure process by which culture flows in and out of individuals. In several paintings I use music to represent this […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Misa Inaoka @ NADA

As you wonder through the endless booths at all the different fairs at Art Basel, you often chance on some unexpected new artists. One of those moments for us this year was San Francisco-based Misa Inaoka and her mutant bird sculptures exhibiting with Johansson Projects at the NADA art fair. Not only did each unique sculpture seem to be created from some strange animal part junkyard, but the pieces had motorized joints and twisted intermittently. More images after the jump…

Openings: “Winter Warmers” @ StolenSpace

Wintertime groups shows are common this time of year, so it’s not surprising we have another one to share with you. “Winter Warmers” opened last week at in London at the StolenSpace Gallery, and as you can see from the image above, D*Face (interviewed) was in a festive mood. The show also marked the release of VNA Issue 10 with a special screenprinted cover by D. Take a look at more images from some established artists as well as some promising young talent after the […]

Teaser: The LOST Underground Art Project @ Gallery 1988 (LA)

Some of us at the AM office are pretty hardcore LOST fans or Losties for those who are hip to the vernacular. That’s why we are looking forward to “The LOST Underground Art Project” opening this Wednesday, December 15th, at Gallery 1988 in LA. Some of you may be aware of the LOST prints that have been released periodically through DamonCarltonAndAPolarBear over the last several months. Well, for the first time, all 16 prints (released and sold out) will be seen in one room. More […]

Openings: Herbert Baglione – “The Dark Wave” @ FIFTY24SF

Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione opened his latest solo show, “The Dark Wave” last night at San Francisco’s FIFTY24SF gallery.  Though the artist was unable to attend, due to passport restrictions, Baglione certainly came correct with an overwhelming selection of original sketches (close to 300!) and nine medium to large sized paintings.  The sketches, which are cash-and-carry till Christmas, have been taken out of Herbert’s personal sketchbooks and provide an insightful look at the processes and growth of this important Brazilian artist. More pictures after the […]

Preview: James Marshall – “And There Was War in Heaven” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Opening tomorrow night at Jonathan LeVine Gallery is James Marshall’s (interviewed) latest show entitled “And There Was War in Heaven.” With this new body of work, the artist formerly known as Dalek continues down the path of near-total geometric abstraction, with few or no references remaining to his early space monkey character. In addition, Marshall has created several paintings with a more simplified style and a very recession-friendly pricing, which will no doubt interest old and new Dalek collectors alike. See the rest of the […]

Preview: Andy Kehoe – “The World Unseen and Those In Between” @ Thinkspace

As the last part of fall gives way to winter, Andy Kehoe gets set to open his show “The World Unseen and Those In Between” at Thinkspace Gallery. How appropriate – as Kehoe’s paintings have become synonymous with the autumn spirit, at least in our minds. His palette includes oranges, browns, and yellows with imagery including leaves, trees, and foliage of the season, as well as the strange creatures that inhabit his world. He opens along side Dabs Myla’s “Earthquake Weather” and Jesse Hotchkiss’ “Learning […]
