Teasers: Skullphone – “Digital Media” @ Subliminal Projects

LA based street artist Skullphone is coming back to home to show at Subliminal Projects on June 5th. Known well for jacking and flipping billboards in the streets we look forward to Skullphone doing some street runs in anticipation for this event. Maybe we’ll see something similar to our favorite “Skully” projects in which the street artist hacked into an electronic billboard and reprogrammed it to display his infamous skull and cell phone image. Check out more after the jump.

Openings: “14 Artists” – New Image Art Gallery

Always one to be on the cutting edge of art, New Image Art Gallery opened their “14 Artists” show last Friday night.  The group show was a result of studio visits and correspondence with, you guessed it, 14 different artists.  It featured works on all different mediums, from Judith Supine’s signature green, purple, and pink collages on canvas to the Date Farmers’ found materials and drawings, to sculpture, such as Dennis McNetts’s “Wolfbat.”  The show included street artists such as Skullphone (who wheatpasted near the [...]

Openings: “Get Rich Quick!” Group Exhibition @ Carmichael Gallery

Last night, the Carmichael Gallery in Hollywood pulled no punches with their all-star show, “Get Rich Quick!,” showcasing the strongest talents in the street and urban art genre. Some scorching hot pieces lined the gallery’s walls for the exhibition, including: a rare Banksy canvas, a KAWS ad disruption, boxes and screen-printed collages from Faile, to originals by Barry McGee and Micallef and much more. Visiting the gallery was like seeing a modern day museum retrospective of the last five years in urban art. Truly amazing. AM has all the [...]

Preview: “the GREAT outDOORS” @ Artbreak Gallery

The most striking, inherent fallacy of street art displayed in a gallery setting is undoubtably the loss of contextual reference for both the viewer and the artist. Just as the adrenaline rush or illegality of street art can never truly be conveyed in a screenprint, the dirt, grime and overall pith and timber of the street can never truly be conveyed on a canvas or for that matter, the internet. It is this intrinsic issue that curators Luna Park and Billikid have attempted to tackle [...]

Openings: 15 Years of New Image Art

Last night’s opening for “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed here and here) reaffirmed why New Image Art is one of the primary driving forces in the alternative/low-brow/street art scene. The show was everything we thought it would be and more – great art, an energetic crowd, and non-stop entertainment. AM congratulates Marsea Goldberg and the entire New Image Art team on an amazing fifteen years! See all the artwork and photos from the opening after the jump.

Setup: 15 Years of New Image Art

Tonight marks the opening of New Image Art’s anniversary show “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed). AM swung by the gallery yesterday to check out the progress of the installation. While we were there, Judith Supine was putting on the finishing touches to his 18′x16′ kinetic sculpture and Neck Face was customizing a motorcycle in his uniquely raw style. In you’re in Los Angeles, don’t miss this milestone event! There are amazing pieces on hand from such notables as Aiko, Anthony Lister, Antonio Diaz, [...]
