Recap: Ry David Bradley – “Not to be Digitized” @ Tristan Koenig

In December, Tristan Koenig held a special off-site project in Sydney of Ry David Bradley’s new two-sided paintings. The New York-based artist was recently intrigued by a hand written note Not to be Digitized on a cupboard within the New York Public Library’s “Pictures Collection” which contained things like prints, photographs, posters, postcards and illustrations from books, magazines, newspapers and classifieds. This got Bradley thinking about how the postcard still exists, despite its purpose being supplanted by modern forms of communications like social media. Seeing some parallels in the art of […]

Showing: Takashi Murakami – “500 Arhats” @ Mori Art Museum

Currently at the Mori Art Museum is Takashi Murakami’s The 500 Arhats, surprisingly his first solo show in Japan in over 14 years when it opened. Fans of the locally-based artist in Tokyo have been spoiled as of late as they were able to enjoy a concurrent show at Kaikai Kiki that closed late last year, but have no fear – the museum exhibition is open through March 6th. The major showing from founder of the Superflat movement features a series of sculptures and paintings that he was moved to create after […]

Art Focus: Trevor Wheatley

Our latest Art Focus feature introduces you to the singular work of Trevor Wheatley and his mix of sculptural skills, public art, and typography. Photos of the Toronto-based artist’s signage in the great outdoors can initially deceive you into thinking there is some photoshopping involved, but the slang terms and cultural references used are sculptural creations that show his mastery over a creative mix of materials. He explains his work as such – “Initially, I wanted to impose graphic one-liners on untouched environments. I started with the […]

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Streets: Phlegm

Another mural that caught our attention during Basel Week Miami was a clever new creation from Phlegm. Curated by Fresco Art and painted on the side of the Bon Vivant building, the new piece takes cues from the railroad track next to the site and features the Sheffield-based artist’s recognizable characters taking a ride on a train. Take a look at the amazing details of the locomotive, the tunnels & towers it traverses, and the creatures in the photos below… Discuss Basel Week Miami here. Discuss Phlegm here. […]
