Recap: Colin Christian – “Cosplay” @ Vered Gallery

Over the weekend, Vered Gallery opened a new showing from Colin Christian (interviewed) entitled Cosplay, a fitting name collectively for the new selection of sculptures and for his work in general. The London-born and now Florida-based artist creates mostly comely female figures out of fiberglass and silicone, an natural offshoot of his artistic vision while operating a business initially making latex clothing for fetish stores around the country. As indicated by the name of the exhibition, he costumes his creations, often taking inspiration from “old sci-fi movies, pinup […]

Art Focus: Fernando Gomez Balbontin

Today’s Art Focus features Fernando Gomez Balbontin, a painter who hails from Santiago, Chile. Seen here are an ongoing series of works entitled Thoughts About Life And Death, acrylic on canvas paintings that depict horrific crashes (automobiles and planes) with strange figures seen next to the scenes of disasters. While assessing the situation, the viewer is left to ponder their views on death, which is in […]

Openings: Tara McPherson – “Supernova” @ Merry Karnowsky

Last weekend, the opening of Supernova at Merry Karnowsky Gallery by Tara McPherson reminded her fans in Los Angeles of some of the reasons they love her work. Working in warm blues and reds, her female characters are rendered flatly with crisp lines, yet with an urgent vibrancy as the New York-based artist and gallery owner plays with familiar heart and water motifs. Take a look at more photos below… Discuss this show here. Discuss Tara McPherson here.

Streets: ROA (Sweden)

Last week, ROA was caught on the move again, this time popping up in Bromölla, Sweden where he painted a mural for Ifö Center as part of their Artist-in-Residence program. The project originated in the unoccupied floors of a factory with Belgium-based street painter being the first international artist to leave his mark on the external walls. Because the area is known for its prehistoric fossil finds, ROA decided to paint the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus, a fitting piece in his oeuvre of creature dissections. Photo credit: Henrik Haven. Studio Visits/Previews: Casey Weldon – “Novel Relic” @ Roq la Rue

Nestled deep in the foothills of the Cascades, Casey Weldon paints diligently to finish up several pieces for his solo show Novel Relic, opening at the Roq la Rue Gallery in Seattle on August 7th. Themes of nature and old technology collide with a color palette borrowed directly from the television color bars seen in several pieces. The serene scenery around the lakeside property has had a heavy influence in these new paintings, as a native flower morphs into a gramophone and ferns become television […]

Streets: Greg “Craola” Simkins (Los Angeles)

It doesn’t happen often that Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) grabs a spray can, but when he does, he usually creates something exceptional. After not painting walls for quite some time, his newest mural, which he recently finished in Los Angeles, is definitely an example of that. With support from Branded Arts and Graphaids, the LA-based artist took some time off his studio work and upcoming animated I’m Scared: The Movie, in order to create this fantastic piece. Completely figurative, with no letters or other “classic” graffiti elements, the piece […]
