The 4th Wall Project opened the first major Boston solo show earlier this month from Japanese artist Kenji Nakayama. Departing from his typical work, the Beantown-based painter has produced a series focused on shapes, lines, textures, and colors collectively entitled Études. It’s been a long time coming and finally Swoon (interviewed) unveiled her massive installation at the Brooklyn Museum. Entitled Submerged Motherlands, this exhibition ties together many themes by the talented and dedicated artist from Red Hook. Openings: “SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot” @ Oakland Museum of California

Last weekend, the Oakland Museum of California opened a new exhibition, entitled SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the art and culture magazine Giant Robot. Along with a diverse selection of GR branded paraphenalia and publications, artists who have been involved with them over the years contributed original artwork as well as some wall murals. Showing: Berndnaut Smilde – “Antipode” @ Ronchini Gallery

We first introduced you to Berndnaut Smilde’s work last year, when a video was released documenting the Amsterdam-based artist’s amazing process of creating “clouds” indoors. Over the weekend, an exhibition to benefit CAMP2E opened at the Soze Gallery entitled Steer Ahead. Artists like Dave Kinsey (seen above), Victor Castillo, Cyrcle., Devngosha, James Haunt, Brittany Segal, Dan Quintana, Bon Nielsen, Gregory Siff, Aaron De La Cruz, Paige Smith, Kristin Bauer, RETNA, Sarah Sandin, Aaron De la Cruz, Bone Thrower, Cole Sternberg, and Fidia Falaschetti were asked to customize and paint real steer skulls and display it along with original artwork. Armory Week ’14: Scope

One of the satellite fairs we make a point to catch during Armory Week is Scope. Hosting a variety of genres, the event featured a diverse mix of street art, low brow and emerging contemporary art working together as gallerists brought work from artists which you may be familiar with here on AM. Mike Giant x Major Lazer / Pharrell – “Aerosol Can” Music Video

Mazer Lazer recently unveiled their latest music video Aerosol Can featuring Pharrell and the artistic stylings of Mike Giant. In the footage, you can see the heavily tattooed (last covered by us in 2012) Bay Area artist showing off his calligraphy skills as he writes out the song lyrics, augmented by graphics.
