Openings: Ernest Zacharevic – “Art Is Rubbish Is Art” (Malaysia)

Last week in Malaysia, Ernest Zacharevic opened a solo show at the Old Hin Bus Depot, mirroring his street work with paintings indoors as well as multiple installations and murals outdoors (more on these later). Entitled Art Is Rubbish Is Art, the body of work from the Lithuanian artist introduced to his fans in Penang the concept of “one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure,” seen in his art as well as the renovated abandoned space used as his gallery. Take a look at photos from the show as well as shots […]

Recap: Sol Lewitt @ Paula Cooper Gallery

Back in the fall, Paula Cooper Gallery transformed their main Chelsea space with a Sol Lewitt piece entitled Wall Drawing #564: Complex forms with color ink washes superimposed. Lewitt is generally considered one of the most important figures in conceptual art and is known for creating detailed instructions for art works, which then could be made and remade by trained craftsmen. In that vein, Wall Drawing #564—with its multicolored, multifaceted forms covering nearly 2,500 square feet of wall space—is a presentation of a work first […]

Basel Week Miami ’13: Rubell Family Collection – “28 Chinese”

While down in Miami for Art Basel Week, we took the opportunity to check out 28 Chinese, the current exhibition at the Rubell Family Collection. As the name implies, the show consisted of paintings, photographs, sculptures and videos by 28 contemporary Chinese artists which were acquired by the Rubells’ during multiple visits to China between 2001 and 2012. Although a few of the artists included, such as Ai Weiwei, are very well known, others had never before shown their work in the United States. The exhibition […]

Openings: “Conjoined IV” @ Copro Gallery

Over the weekend in Los Angeles, the Copro Gallery opened the fourth edition of their sculptural group show curated by Chet Zar (interviewed). Entitled Conjoined IV: A New Beginning, the exhibition featured the work of many talented artists and sculptors out there, some of which work in the film industry. One of the stand out pieces was an amazingly realistic tribute to Andy Warhol by Kazuhiro Tsuji (seen above next to his work) that must be seen in person to be believed. Take a look at a selection […]

Studio Visits: Wayne White

AM recently got the chance to visit Wayne White in his Los Angeles studio. His workspace is as amazing and surreal as you would imagine, including four foot tall eyes and an oversized mask of former president Lyndon Johnson. Although White is best known in the art world for his paintings that combine vintage imagery with clever, bright colored words, he is also recognizable as the star of the documentary Beauty is Embarrassing and for his work on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. When we arrived he was […]

LA Art Show ’14: Highlights

Yesterday, AM stopped by the 19th edition Los Angeles Art Fair at the LA Convention Center to see what the art world had to offer. Although the event lacked some some of the blue-chip power seen at some other art fairs, there was still plenty to hold our attention including the new Littletopia section of of the fair that included art from a genre often not seen at this particular fair. Take a look at some of the highlights (like the barbed wire slippers installation by Tony […]

Josh Keyes – “The Old Ones” / “Far Side of the World” Online Show

Earlier this week, Josh Keyes (interviewed) released images to the first installment of his Far Side of the World online show. The Old Ones sees the Portland-based artist explore the origins of the animals and creatures that inhabit his paintings, some larger than life. Continuing to explore a new style that takes his imagery clear to the edges, Keyes has put aside for now the organic cubism and isolated constructs that has been his calling card over the years. Take a look at the rest of the paintings below… Discuss […]

Studio Visit: Katrin Fridriks

We stopped by Katrin Fridriks workshop/studio in Paris during holidays, and got a chance to see her recent works as they were getting packed for their trip to fairs worldwide. We also got to talk with her about her plans for 2014, and the way all the successful shows, fairs and auction results are affecting her work and life. Being one of the few female artist out there that reached the level she is at, we were interested to find out more about her and her […]

Take a look at these initial progress shots and stay locked to AM as we will be bringing you […]

Openings: Saber – “The Ugly American” @ The Outsiders (London)

After Newcastle, LA-based graffiti artist SABER (interviewed) launched the second installment of his first European solo show The Ugly American at The Outsiders in London. Suffering from epilepsy and being denied healthcare, the politically engaged artist decided to voice some issues and battles for universal care by attacking and transforming iconic images of US and Union Jack flags, using found packing crates. Saber’s abstract paintings, made with layered collages and painted paper, combine harmoniously to form a delicate texture with his strong and powerful sharp signature lines. The show runs until mid February. […]
