Openings: Adam Wallacavage – “Magic Mountain” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, AM stopped by the currently running show from Adam Wallacavage (interviewed) at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. Magic Mountain features the Philadelphia-based artist’s surreal mixed media sculptures and functional art objects as well as some pieces inspired and cast from vintage toys in his personal collection. Vhils – “Contraste” @ PT Data Center (Portugal)

Vhils is one of the most innovative artists coming out of Portugal in recent years. So in some regards, it’s not entirely surprising to find him working with cork, which is one of the most exported and environmentally friendly natural materials of the region. Over the weekend, fans in Los Angeles were once again able to enjoy a new body of work from Travis Louie (interviewed) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery. It’s been couple years since his last showing at the space (see 2011), but the paintings and drawings for Strange Discoveries were well worth the wait. Dedicated to his father who recently passed away, the exhibition featured Louie’s signature dignified portraiture of surreal creatures rendered amazingly to look like vintage photos. Streets: Faile (New York)

Last month, AM stopped by the original Record Plant in New York to check out the largest outdoor mural to date from Faile (featured). Designed by the Patrick’s and painted by Colossal Media, the massive piece on the side of the building in Hell’s Kitchen features some of the collective’s signature imagery. Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Coacervate” @ Jonathan LeVine

Last month, we stopped by the Jonathan LeVine Gallery to check out a new solo show from Masakatsu Sashie (featured). Included in the exhibition entitled Coacervate (Latin for “to assemble together or cluster”) of course were different permutations of the fan-favorite globes created out of buildings, appliances, vending machines, and other urban man-made elements, but also seen was an impressive sculptural representation (seen above) of the Japanese artist’s signature imagery. KAWS certainly has had a busy schedule in the last couple of weeks with multiple openings that drew huge crowds. The Brooklyn-based artist in the last month or so has opened UPS AND DOWN at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City and a show at the PAFA in Philadelphia. AM recently attended the opening of Tara McPherson’s newest show at Jonathan LeVine, her third solo with the Chelsea gallery. Inspired by the unexplored realms of deep space and deep sea, Wandering Luminations features the Brooklyn-based artist’s surreal portraiture of females and creatures all rendered in her signature palette of pinks and teals. The Japanese art superstar and some of the characters from the movie spent a day with Angela Lindvall and photographer Jason Schmidt out in Los Angeles prepping for the December/January issue.
