Openings: Risk – “Metallic Tissue” @ Fabien Castanier

Over the weekend, Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles hosted an exhibition featuring new work by Kelly “RISK” Graval (interviewed) curated by Roger Gastman. Drawing from a career spanning over 30 years, the legendary hometown graffiti artist has created a diverse body of work collectively entitled Metallic Tissue. Studio Visits: Dennis McNett – “Temple of Wolfbat” @ Known Gallery

AM recently stopped by the Wolfbat Studios of Dennis McNett. The Brooklyn-based artist is getting ready for his solo exhibition entitled Temple of Wolfbat at Known Gallery in Los Angeles that is set to open on November 16th. While there, we got a sneak peek of what’s to come for this big Los Angeles exhibition. From sculptures, leather etchings, wood carving, to collage paintings, McNett continues to bring us on his animalistic storytelling journey. Discuss Dennis McNett here.

Openings: KAWS @ Mary Boone Gallery (Chelsea)

Continuing his spate of strong showings recently, KAWS opened one of two shows over the weekend in New York at the Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea. For this space, the Brooklyn-based artist created three new wooden sculptures, over eighteen feet high, in a style first seen in Switzerland for a showing for Basel week. These three monumental wooden companions were displayed along with three eight foot tondos. Michael Johansson – “Shades and Variables” @ Galleri Andersson/Sandström (Stockholm)

A couple month ago, the Stockholm location of Galleri Andersson/Sandström hosted new work from Swedish artist Michael Johansson (featured). Continuing his recent spate of showings in Europe, Shades and Variables featured works that he has become known form. Color coded Tetris-like cubes constructed perfectly from everyday items, an installation wall of tightly fitted components, and his play on toy kits filled the space. Openings: Ron English – “Popogandastan” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last Saturday night, fans of Ron English (featured) packed the opening of his newest show at Corey Helford Gallery in Culver City, eager to see a new body of work that has been two years in the making. Popogandastan featured pieces that explored the gifted painter’s incredibly detailed world, filled with his surreal cast of characters and lush backgrounds. Over the weekend, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City opened up a new show from KAWS entitled UPS AND DOWNS. The NY-based artist has been on a roll recently (also see PAFA, BAM, MTV, Basel, Tokyo) and it looks like he still has a couple more high profile shows scheduled before the end of the year.
