Previews: Amy Sol – “Garden Garmine” @ Thinkspace Gallery

This Saturday night, April 2nd, Amy Sol (interviewed) will opening her solo at Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Entitled Garden Gamine, the set of new pieces continue to show her love for nature with flora and fauna surrounding her female characters. The delicate works feature the Nevada-based artist’s experimentations with oils in a full set of paintings for the first time. Previously seen as an ink drawing and oil on canvas piece, the “Labyrinth” image from Rustam Qbic recently took form as a large mural in Kiev, Ukraine, officially marking the beginning of the Art United Us project. Showing: Vhils – “Debris” @ HOCA Foundation (Part I)

As part of his solo exhibition with the HOCA Foundation in Hong Kong, Alexandre Farto aka Vhils (filmed) has prepped a special installation at the Terrace of Pier 4 in Central. The neon works were modeled after the ubiquitous lighted signage the Portuguese saw during his residency in Hong Kong, as well as images that he created from scratch. Currently in Beers London, new paintings collectively entitled Turning The Tide from Jenny Morgan are on view through April 23rd. The exhibition is the Brooklyn-based artist’s first solo in the UK and introduces her vivid portraits featuring her signature saturated color choices, paired with toned-down grays. The contrast between the two palettes mirror the duality of the human psyche, a paradox of opposites – light and dark, good and evil, confident and vulnerable. Street: Herakut (Los Angeles)

Leading up to the opening of their solo show this weekend at Corey Helford Gallery, Herakut painted a new mural featuring their signature mix of photorealistic and abstract elements. The new piece on the side of the gallery was painted next something Ron English put up and you can definitely see that what they chose to paint was partially in reaction to that. Earlier this month, the POW! WOW! crew spent a second year (see 2015) at SXSW painting murals for festival goers to enjoy. Last weekend in Los Angeles, Kohn Gallery hosted the opening of Ryan McGinness second solo with them with a new body of work entitled #metadata. With this new showing, the New York-based artist presented a interesting installation featuring his distance imagery as well as two new series of works – Studio Views and Screen Combines. Earlier this month, New York City welcomed in the Armory Art Show. This annual event showcases some of the brightest names and current trends in contemporary art (@ Pier 94) with a portion dedicated to some of the classics from art history (@ Pier 92). Leading things off is an impressive new anamorphic mural from eL Seed that covers almost 50 buildings in the neighborhood of Manshiyat Nasr in Cairo, Egypt.
