Preview: “Quentin vs. Coen” @ Bold Hype Gallery

Following up on the fun and success of last year’s Bad Dads: A Tribute to Wes Anderson (covered), our friends at Spoke Art will continue to marry their love of iconic filmmakers with clever group shows, this time pitting cult heroes Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers against one another in a battle-royale style art throwdown. Opening Thursday, April 7th at Bold Hype Gallery, Quentin vs. Coen will serve as the first installment of their “versus” series, incorporating over 100 artists from the New Contemporary […]

Studio Visit: Eddie Colla, D Young V, and Shark Toof

On occasion of his inclusion in Spoke Art’s Urban Osmosis exhibition (which we previewed last week), the Los Angeles-based Shark Toof made the much-traveled trek north to the Bay Area.  While in the area, Mr. Toof knocked on the doors to the Oakland studio of his friends and occasional mischievous collaborators, Eddie Colla and D Young V to check out the impressive installation piece they were creating for the exhibition.  Consisting of the familiar sight of East Bay Express newspaper boxes (although you normally don’t […]

It’s been a wonderful run for Spoke Art at Lopo Gallery, but just like 2010, it must come to an end.  Coincidentally, the opening of this final show will be on the ultimate day of the year.  Now-veteran curator Ken Harman presents a show featuring immersive site-specific installations, in three separate rooms, from new and established street and fine art artists.  They include Eddie Colla, Kelly Towles, D Young V, GATS, and the prolific Shark Toof. Ring in your new year surrounded by art and […]

The effects of both were on full display during Spoke Art’s Bad Dads: A Tribute to Wed Anderson (previewed) group exhibition. Curated by our friend Ken Harman, managing online editor over at Hi-Fructose, the event served as the best excuse humanly possible to break out the cowboy hats, track suites, headbands and Zissuo red beanies in honor of one of the finest writer/directors of our generation. Despite the excellent costume […]

In honor of one America’s most talented and beloved filmmakers, Spoke Art’s upcoming concept show (held at LoPo Gallery) will pay homage to the witty genius that is Wes Anderson. Opening this Saturday, October 30th, Bad Dads: A Tribute to Wes Anderson will serve as the backdrop for a diverse group of artists – including Ana Bagayan (seen above), Dave MacDowell, Greg Gossel, Caia Koopman, Munk One, Dabs Mayla and many more – given carte blanche with their interpretations of the characters and stories that […]
