Showing: Stephen “ESPO” Powers – “Visual Blues” @ Alice Gallery

Last week, fans of ESPO (featured) in Brussels were treated to a new solo from the New York-based artist when Visual Blues opened up at the Alice Gallery. The new body of work centered around a series of small pieces he paints daily called Metaltations as well as larger versions of those pieces. The imagery centers around witty wordplays and imagery from his visual language all rendered with a minmalistic signpainting aesthetic. Along with a novel setup and display of the work (see above), Powers also created [...]

Preview: Stephen Powers – “Visual Blues” @ Alice Gallery

Brooklyn-based artist and professorial sign painter, Stephen Powers aka ESPO (featured), is currently in Brussels where he’s setting up his solo show titled Visual Blues at Alice Gallery. For his second exhibition with the gallery, he prepared a big mural installation on the walls of the showspace as well as his latest enamel paintings on aluminum (Metaltations), but the centerpieces of the show are smaller pieces popularly known as Daily Metaltations. These 10” x 8” enamel paintings are mostly based on sketches inspired by everyday problems and pleasures, often on the [...]

Openings: Direct Address @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Last week, we attended Joshua Liner’s opening of his new Chelsea gallery with a group exhibition entitled Direct Address. The expansive ground-floor space was filled with a impressive collection of works by The Clayton Brothers, David Ellis,  Evan Hecox, Jean-Pierre Roy, Kris Kuksi (above), Richard Colman, Stephen Powers, SWOON, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Tony Curanaj and others. The event surely heralds great things for the future of the gallery. See all our pics from the opening below.

Teaser: Steve Powers & Todd James – “Livingston STREET MARKET” @ Icy Signs

ESPO & REAS are at it again – this time perhaps without the third conspirator, Barry McGee, in regards to the Street Market installation seen recently at the seminal Art in the Streets exhibition at the LA MoCA. On November 19th, the duo will be exhibiting the 5400 sq. feet of signs and paintings from the museum installation at ICY SIGNS (200 Livingston Street in Brooklyn). Make sure you show up to see a piece of history if you are in the area. Showcard and [...]

Events: “Aidan Has A Posse” Benefit @ Wooster St. Social Club

The other night, we attended a great event held at the Wooster St. Social Club for Aidan Has A Posse, a website raising funds for and awareness about Aidan Seeger. Aidan is a young boy who has Adrenoleukodystrophy

(ALD), a rare neurological disorder. But he also has a lot of friends, a posse including the likes of Cope2, Tony Curanaj, Ewok, Todd James, Romon Kimin Yang, Greg Lamarche, Steve Powers and Kostas Seremetis – all of whom donated art works to be auctioned off to [...]

Releases: ESPO “Superfeen” print

We just came across Stephen Powers aka ESPO’s updated website, First and Fifteenth, this morning and saw that there is a host of back catalog goodness available, such as this ‘Superfeen‘ screenprint on plastic from 2002. They come from an edition of 300, but we assumed they were long sold out. Grab one now, as it looks as ESPO is signing each one with a punchline to the storyboard and a hand drawn image of everyone’s favorite weakest super-hero. The wonderful ‘Handy Signs’ print is [...]

Openings: POW Shop Opens Its Doors

Pictures On Walls (POW) opened a new shop-cum-gallery in London last week and AM dropped in to take a look around at what goodies might be on offer. Rather than being just a print shop, we were pleasantly surprised to find some real gems of hand worked prints plus original works for sale by some of our favourites; including a Banksy canvas, a huge Stephen Powers piece on acrylic, original work from Kill Pixie and Blu plus a fantastic collection of work from the prolific [...]
