Releases: Woodstock (KAWS Version)

For those who missed out on getting the newest KAWS figure in person as part of your Christmas shopping (which is most of you as this release was in Japan), tomorrow will be your second chance. His version of Woodstock with his now characteristic double x’s will be available on Kawsone at Noon Eastern for those quick enough to snap it up. Discuss KAWS here.

Update: Barry McGee

After recently seeing some of Barry McGee’s work during Basel Week Miami (here & here), it reminded us to get an update together on some things that we have come across recently from Mr. Twist. First up are a couple of recently released insightful videos that we enjoyed watching – one regarding his epic mural at Brooklyn’s Mark Morris Dance Group building (covered here & here) and the other regarding a commission he created for the Oakland Museum of California. Even more exciting is word of McGee’s next museum showing scheduled […]

Streets: Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada – “Terrestrial Series / Mama Cash” (Amsterdam)

Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada was recently invited to Amsterdam to work on a piece for the International Human Rights Day that helped to launch Vogelvrije Vrouwen (Defend women who defend human rights!). This campaign raises awareness to the plight of Mesoamerican women who are illegally targeted and terrorized for defending human rights in that region and was commissioned by feminist foundation Mama Cash. The large-scale land portrait that spanned almost two football fields (created with the help of 80 volunteers) is part of the Cuban American artist’s ongoing Terrestrial Series. He states […]

Rewind: Dec 31 – Jan 6

For this week’s video Rewind, we start things off with news that starting Wednesday and running through Feb. 5, about 3,000 New York City taxis will feature a 30-second video from Ryan McGinley. The short clip, called Varuo, is gleaned from footage from the photographer and director’s video for the Icelandic band Sigur Ros (seen below) and shows a girl skipping barefoot through the streets of NYC with gold glitter streaming from her hair. Other videos you may want to watch: A look at Eric […]

Overtime: Dec 31 – Jan 5

Overtime stories of the week: Impossible Architecture, a series of works utilizing digital collaging technique & real photos from Filip Dujardin. Nigeria seeking return of art from Britain, which they say looted works from them more than a century ago. Workers uncover six murals by Otto Dix behind a bookshelf in the artist’s former home during renovations. The story of how Peru High School in Peru Indiana acquired its multimillion dollar art collection. William Cole criticizes today’s art market and wonders aloud if we are in a […]

Upcoming: Faile – “Les BALLETS de FAILE” @ Lincoln Center

It’s a brand new year and the Patrick’s (aka FAILE) are leading things off with a special project that’s been under wraps for quite a while. Earlier in the year when we visited Faile’s studio while they were working on their trip to Mongolia, we were excited to learn about an upcoming collaborative endeavor with the New York City Ballet, but we were asked to keep this project air tight. The time has come now to share with you information about the large-scale exhibition at the Lincoln Center that will feature the many […]

Streets: Slinkachu (Russia)

It appears cold weather hasn’t deterred the skills and intentions of street miniaturist Slinkachu. The London-based artist continues to hit up major metropolitan areas around the world (the theme of his last solo show) – this time in Gorky Park (Moscow, Russia). Looks like his tiny people sculptures should watch out for giants aka humans. Discuss Slinkachu here.

Preview: Aakash Nihalani – “Portal” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Coming up on the 12th, the solo at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery from Haroshi that we shared news with you earlier will be accompanied by a new body of work from Aakash Nihalani. Both artists share a three-dimensionality to their aesthetic so it should be an interesting pairing. For Nihlani’s part, entitled Portal, the showing will feature his increasingly intricate geometric forms which always seem to have a playful element to them. Perhaps this is due to the interactive nature of his work on the […]

Streets: MOMO x Eltono – “Impropbables” (France)

After recently working on a mural in Miami (covered), MOMO headed to Besancon, France where he collaborated with Eltono on a series of public installations they entitled Impropbables. Sharing a penchant for geometric shapes and color theory, the two artists created a series of street interventions in 52 different locations with found materials, a hand saw, and a rubber mallet. Those interested in looking deeper into this series of works may be interested in purchasing a zine they published on the project here. Via Graffuturism. Discuss Momo here.
