Streets: Eine – LA Weekly Building

UK-based street artist Ben Eine, who recently showed in SF (covered), made the trip down to Southern California soon after as we saw him at both the D*Face opening and of course participating at the Art in the Streets exhibition (covered) at the MOCA. Just like in San Francisco, he found time to work on some street typographical magic, this time on the LA Weekly building. More images of the crossword themed piece after the jump…

Sketchbook: Elbow-Toe

It’s time to once again revisit our sketchbook feature. This time, we highlight some of the drawings of Elbow-Toe (interviewed) who we recently caught up with in London.  If you remember he was in town for his Black Rat Projects show (covered) and also found time to get up on the streets. Looks like besides his more complicated self-described “cut paper paintings,” the NY-based artist also has some traditional drawing skills. Take a look at more of these studies after the jump that he worked […]

Releases: Shepard Fairey x COPE x Martha Cooper Print

Reuniting three major players from the Art in the Streets exhibition, this latest release from OBEY Giant features the photography of Martha Cooper (interviewed) of a wall with Shepard Fairey (featured) and COPE’s work on it, all distilled through Shep’s distinctive filter.  The 18 x 24″ signed screen print will be released today, April 21st, online at a random time with a limited run of 450 and priced at $60 for those interested. Some photos of the artists signing the print via Modern Multiples after […]

Take a look at a previous article for more info if you are interested. Discuss Miss Van here.

Streets: Blu & Ericailcane (Palestra)

Although we didn’t see any of his work in the Art in the Streets exhibition at the MOCA last week (probably related to the controversial buffing of his mural), most people still consider Blu one of the most important street artists at the moment. In fact, both him and fellow Italian artist Ericailcane (who recently collaborated on a mural in Bologna) are some of our favorites out there and they reaffirm our love for their work with this recent mural they are working on in […]

Openings: “Facemaker” @ Royal/T

Facemaker opened at Royal/T last Wednesday, curated by Kathy Grayson, director of The Hole NYC and former director of the Deitch Projects. Just in time for Art in the Streets, the eclectic Culver City art space has teamed up with the New York gallery to put on a street-pop frenzy, displaying a playful amalgam of colorful imagery centered on different interpretations of the face. With street artists Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Kenny Scharf, KAWS, and SWOON on the roster, alongside Clare Rojas, FriendsWithYou, Ben Jones, […]

Streets: LUDO (Zurich)

As mentioned in our coverage of his debut gallery exhibition in Zurich, LUDO (interviewed) spent a good amount of time out on the streets in advance of the opening pasting up a whole host of smart, sizable pieces. Interestingly, due to the diligently cleaned Swiss streets and serious lack of street art, not only was the Paris-based artist advised to not attend, the gallery went so far as to preempt any unnecessary hindrances to the opening and published an article in the local newspaper explicitly […]

Focus: Swoon – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

One of the surprises for AM while visiting the Art in the Streets exhibition was pulling aside the curtain and stepping inside the Swoon (interviewed) installation. The huge tent-like illuminated paper and cloth construct invited viewers to explore all 360 degrees of glorious detail. We found ourselves returning again and again to take in the novel new imagery from the Brooklyn-based artist and you should as well. More detailed shots after the jump..

Focus: Shepard Fairey – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

Another street artist featured in MOCA’s Art in the Streets show was none other than Shepard Fairey (featured). Again teaming up with Jeffery Deitch (Shep was the final exhibition at Deitch Projects), the prolific artist created a tightly focused room that revealed new canvases based off of previously “beautified” locations. Of course, there were also the classic stencils that spanned back to his early days. And if you had a chance to visit the gift shop you would have see an awesome mural (previewed) he […]
