Washington, D.C. got hit with a taste of urban art this past weekend thanks to the Irvine Contemporary, who held a group show and street/studio experience that featured artists: Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Dalek, Gaia, Imminent Disaster, Oliver Vernon, EVOL and Pisa 73. AM got to tag along as these urban artists got together to create a show that was not only inside the gallery, but also along the back walls and alleys of some prime D.C. real estate. From the moment daybreak started on Thursday, EVOL, Pisa […]

Well below the radar for most American and UK collectors, Art Curial in Paris have been putting together stronger and stronger offerings in the Graffiti, Street and Urban Art arena. After the 1980’s “graffiti in art galeries” boom died in the USA, many of the artists continued to do well in continental Europe and we are seeing some classic pieces show up in auctions like the one coming up on June 29th. There is a strong selection from 80’s NYC Graff Artists like Crash, Daze, […]
ABOVE (interviewed) made a stop in Madrid, Spain as part of his current European tour. He made sure to give the locals a little love with some fresh street pieces that highlight his excellent placement skills and clever play on words. A video and detailed photos of both pieces after the jump.
AM recently had a chance to sit down with Johann Haehling von Lanzenauer, Co-Director of the Circleculture Gallery in Berlin for a little talk about the history of the gallery and Johann’s insight into the art world. Circleculture have been a long time supporter of the international underground art world and their current show SELF-PORTRAITS (covered) is not to be missed. Check out all the questions and answers after the jump.
As is often the case, KAWS breaking news comes from originalfake with the uploading of this robotic image of the newest KAWS release. The figure is a collaboration between KAWS and and his friend Hajime Sorayama, a Japanese artist famous for his sexy robotic “pin-up” art. The melding of the KAWS companion and Sorayama’s “Future Mickey Mouse” will definitely be in high demand but no word yet on pricing… Update: Apparently there will be a more rare black version along with the silver. More pics […]
Peep this little preview of “Motion Portrait” by WK Interact. It’s set to open this Saturday at Jonathan Levine Gallery. The French artist, who’s well known for his energetic style, will unveil a large scale group of portraits called “12 Angry Men” (loosely based on the classic film). These large 6 feet by 6 feet portraits move to convey the dynamic expressions of his powerful characters in raw emotion. There will also be a few of his signature kinetic door pieces such as the “Crosby […]
To coincide with Swoon’s “Swimming Cities of Serenissima” arrival in Venice, Glowlab put on a show “Drift” last weeekend in New York that featured her work as well as pieces from Matthew Lusk, Santiago Mostyn, and Javier Piñón. The title of the show, “Drift,” refers to “both physical drifting – a raft as it moves across the ocean – and the metaphorical drifting of transient communities and populations that live on the fringes of mainstream society.” Swoon (interviewed) contributed a pretty nice installation with some […]
Don’t we all wish that we could take a quick trip up to Bristol to catch the madhouse of artistic antics known as “Bristol Museum Vs. Banksy“? Well, one of our good friends from San Francisco actually made a special trip to the UK just to spend a weekend soaking in all the Banksy goodness, taking the time to make this rad video that captures the spirit of this amazing show. This video not only documents the details inside, but also some of the iconic […]
AM has been watching French stencil master C215 (aka Christian Guémy) cut through the noise of derivative copycats since 2006 and we never cease to be impressed. Something must be happening in France since JR (covered) is probably the only other street artist traveling as much and doing street work in as many interesting locations. Both artists use their very different techniques to capture people who are often overlooked with powerful impact. Last night in London, C215 opened his first ever UK solo exhibit “Shoeshiners” […]
Our number one passion here at AM is art, but music certainly comes in a close second. The “I Gotta Feeling” video from the Black Eyed Peas melds together these two things we love. It’s awesome to know that there’s a director out there with a fine taste in art. In the music video, a couple of Nick Walker (interviewed) canvases adorn the walls and a nod is made to his “bicycle vandal” character, one of the works we saw in his “A Sequence of […]
