One stop for Ryan McGinness while he is in Los Angeles for a slew of exhibitions and related events will be Subliminal Projects on June 11th. He’s creating a new body of work based on corporate logos and sponsorship entitled Sponsorship Redux. There will be four paintings and two print editions based on McGinness deconstructing the corporate sponsors’ logos and integrating them into his pieces. Graciously staying open and providing an art viewing opportunity for the LA area during the holiday season, Subliminal Projects will unveil Wreck the Walls this Saturday, December 11. The group exhibition of over 30 “rebelious pioneers” will include work from Blek Le Rat, David Ellis, Erik Foss, Eric White, Evan Hecox, Greg Lamarche, Jason Alper, Martha Cooper, Retna, Skullphone, SWOON and Tim Biskup. Subliminal Projects was the host venue for a joint event on Thursday, September 16th: the Los Angeles launch and signing for the book Beyond the Street, followed by the opening reception for Shepard Fairey’s Printed Matters exhibition (covered). AM recently stopped by Shepard Fairey’s (featured) secret secondary studio where much of his “fine art” is actually made. Officially called “Studio Number Two”, the hidden industrial space houses the heavy lumber for his coming show “Printed Matters” at Subliminal Projects. This past Saturday, AM saw the return of Skullphone to his home of Los Angeles. The show “Digital Media” takes a closer look and questions the viewer about their relationship with technology. Skullphone always has packed opening, but this was one of the few where you had to line up and wait for the “one in one out” if you didn’t get there early. LA based street artist Skullphone is coming back to home to show at Subliminal Projects on June 5th. Known well for jacking and flipping billboards in the streets we look forward to Skullphone doing some street runs in anticipation for this event. Maybe we’ll see something similar to our favorite “Skully” projects in which the street artist hacked into an electronic billboard and reprogrammed it to display his infamous skull and cell phone image.
