Openings: “Death and the Maiden 2” & Femke Hiemstra – “The Sand Castle Battle and Other Tales” @ Roq la Rue

Well folks, this is it. The swan song as the sun sets on Roq la Rue, one of the most influential galleries of low brow turned pop surrealism and new contemporary the scene has ever seen. Owner Kirsten Anderson has decided that after eighteen years, it’s time to begin a new adventure in the name of the nameless, starting a non-profit to aid in the protection of animals that are illegally hunted and poached. Showing: Fifth Annual “Supersonic Invitational” @ Spoke Art

If you attended any of the previous Supersonic Invitational shows, you know you’re in for a treat. We were unable to attend the reception last Saturday night at Spoke Art, but we met up with the curator/art blogger, Zach Tutor, earlier in the day for a look at all the artwork. Zach’s line up included over 75 artists from all over the globe. Supersonic Art has accrued over 500,000 followers worldwide and it seems like this show gets bigger and better each year. It also […]

Openings: “One Page” @ Roq La Rue

They fascinated me and I wondered what a full show, with an assortment of artists might be like. The planning began and a date was chosen […]

Openings: “Uchronia” Group Show and Amanda Manitach – “Whiskey Helps” @ Roq La Rue

Opening alongside Peter Ferguson’s Prime Meridian (covered), Roq La Rue packed even more art into the space to showcase the mini-group show titled Uchronia, and the upstairs featured Amanda Manitach’s Whiskey Helps. Featuring mostly Roq La Rue alumns, Uchronia asked artists to recreate or alter history in some way.  Femke Hiemstra imagines a different take on evolution which has enabled a frog to smoke a pipe while fly fishing with a pole. Jessica McCourt unveils the mystery of Percy Fawcett’s disappearance with a painting framed by […]
