Previews: Takashi Murakami – “Homage to Yves Klein” @ Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin

On the heels of his print retrospective, A History of Editions, over the summer at Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Takashi Murakami will be returning to the Paris gallery for an exhibition of new original works, potentially more akin to his expansive Self Portraits show there in 2009. In a distinct departure for the superflat pioneer, Homage to Yves Klein, a reference to the post-war European artist who was considered a leading proponent of Nouveau réalisme, will debut a series of abstract color profile works inspired by [...]

Viewpoints / Openings : Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian Gallery, London

For the last five and a half weeks, Gagosian Gallery on Britannia Street (the larger of its two spaces in London) has been hosting a Takashi Murakami exhibition (previewed). The show features five large-scale sculptures along with a group of paintings merging references to both Japanese contemporary society and the country’s artistic heritage. This recent output includes collaborations with manga, animé, figyua and other artists from Japan’s otaku subculture, which some might describe as a curious world of fantasy, self-indulgence, obsession and disengagement. For the [...]

Takashi Murakami fans are in for a real treat as Emmanuel Perrotin is currently holding a retrospective of the limited edition prints created by the founder of the Superflat movement. The space has on display 160 prints created between 2001 to 2011. We drooled over some of Murakami’s rarest prints to date including coveted gems such as 727′s, Tan Tan Bo, Homage to Francis Bacon, Golden DOB just to name a select few. His newer tondo flower and Davy Jones’ Tear abstracts were also on view. This show [...]

Preview: Takashi Murakami @ Gagosian (London)

Opening Monday, June 27th at the Gagosian in London will be a new body of work from Takashi Murakami. It’s been a while since the founder of the Superflat movement has shown in the UK, and it looks like he will be revisiting his overtly sexual sculptural works ala Miss Ko and My Lonesome Cowboy with this new piece seen above entitled 3-Meter Girl. Along with a metal penis of towering proportions, Mr Big Mushroom, and Miss Clam, a metal vagina, the show certainly promises [...]

Google Icon x Takashi Murakami

Since you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with the internet and thus familiar with the occasionally changing Google icon (see Jackson Pollock & Norman Rockwell). Well, the next artist that has been commissioned is Takashi Murakami to celebrate the summer solstice which lands on today, June 21st. Entitled The First Day of Summer, the superflat movement founder has decided to enlist the help of his Kaikai and Kiki characters as well as his multicolored flowers. These images were produced over a three month [...]

Remember when we posted some interesting gems gleaned from Takasahi Murakami’s twitter. We now know where some of these prints Murakami-san was furiously signing in this photo are headed – to Hidaro Zingaro. For those who haven’t heard, this is the new gallery for the Super-Flat founder’s Kaikai Kiki division that opened in April, located on the third floor of Nakano Broadway (site of the previous Inochi display). The prints were released today, June 9th Tokyo time so head over to their website to see if you [...]

Openings: Tat Ito – “Memento Mori” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

We were impressed with the preview images we saw from Tat Ito’s debut New York solo show, Momento Mori, at the Joshua Liner Gallery, but were still blown away after seeing the paintings in person at the opening. Ito’s new paintings retain much of what we loved in his previous work, such as the humorous and unique costumed characters and delicate silver-leafed backgrounds. However, with this collection, Ito has taken his art stylistically and thematically further than anything he has done previously . Two pieces [...]

As you knew from our teaser article, we were looking forward to the Emmanuel Perrotin booth at Art Hong Kong because of what KAWS had to offer.  But, turns out the gallery was showing many other artists from their roster including AM favorites like Takashi Murakami, Mr., Chiho Aoshima, and Aya Takano among many others. More photos courtesy of Jasper Wong (POW WOW) after the jump…
