For the last five and a half weeks, Gagosian Gallery on Britannia Street (the larger of its two spaces in London) has been hosting a Takashi Murakami exhibition (previewed). The show features five large-scale sculptures along with a group of paintings merging references to both Japanese contemporary society and the country’s artistic heritage. Takashi Murakami fans are in for a real treat as Emmanuel Perrotin is currently holding a retrospective of the limited edition prints created by the founder of the Superflat movement. The space has on display 160 prints created between 2001 to 2011. We drooled over some of Murakami’s rarest prints to date including coveted gems such as 727′s, Tan Tan Bo, Homage to Francis Bacon, Golden DOB just to name a select few. Opening Monday, June 27th at the Gagosian in London will be a new body of work from Takashi Murakami. It’s been a while since the founder of the Superflat movement has shown in the UK, and it looks like he will be revisiting his overtly sexual sculptural works ala Miss Ko and My Lonesome Cowboy with this new piece seen above entitled 3-Meter Girl. Since you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with the internet and thus familiar with the occasionally changing Google icon (see Jackson Pollock & Norman Rockwell). Remember when we posted some interesting gems gleaned from Takasahi Murakami’s twitter. We now know where some of these prints Murakami-san was furiously signing in this photo are headed – to Hidaro Zingaro. For those who haven’t heard, this is the new gallery for the Super-Flat founder’s Kaikai Kiki division that opened in April, located on the third floor of Nakano Broadway (site of the previous Inochi display). We were impressed with the preview images we saw from Tat Ito’s debut New York solo show, Momento Mori, at the Joshua Liner Gallery, but were still blown away after seeing the paintings in person at the opening. Ito’s new paintings retain much of what we loved in his previous work, such as the humorous and unique costumed characters and delicate silver-leafed backgrounds.
