Previews: Date Farmers – “Shit Ain’t Funny” @ Ace Gallery

Returning to the massive Ace Gallery showspace in Beverly Hills after a successful solo there in 2010 (covered), the Date Farmers will be opening another exhibition tonight entitled Shit Ain’t Funny. Hailing out of the Coachella Valley, the two collaborative artists whose real names are Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez will be presenting works that deal with social and political issues of the working class. The themes explored are near and dear to their hearts, not surprising after considering the blue-collar community where they are based. They […]

Openings: “Three-Handed” & “Smother Your Mother” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

This past weekend, AM caught the opening of the Date Farmers, Eric White (interviewed), Nicola Verlato and Fulvio Di Piazza at Jonathan Levine Gallery. The two shows were unique as it touched on both ends of the spectrum in terms of dimensions with all the way from large scale museum size works to a cornucopia of medium to smaller size pieces. First, we saw the immense paintings from “Three Handed” which featured Eric White, Nicola Verlato and Fulvio Di Piazza. Eric’s breathtaking piece “Massacre of the […]

Preview/Installation: Date Farmers – “Smother Your Mother” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

The Coachella Valley collective Date Farmers (aka: Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez) are about to open up a new solo at Jonathan Levine Gallery. “Smother Your Mother” is truly as it sounds – we were overwhelmed by the colors, mediums and works that were created when we stop by the gallery to check out their installation progress. Really rolling up their sleeves, Armando and Carlos were focused on creating an environment that grabs at the viewers, from Yoda, Prison Shanks, and their trademark symbols on found material, […]

Openings: “14 Artists” – New Image Art Gallery

Always one to be on the cutting edge of art, New Image Art Gallery opened their “14 Artists” show last Friday night.  The group show was a result of studio visits and correspondence with, you guessed it, 14 different artists.  It featured works on all different mediums, from Judith Supine’s signature green, purple, and pink collages on canvas to the Date Farmers’ found materials and drawings, to sculpture, such as Dennis McNetts’s “Wolfbat.”  The show included street artists such as Skullphone (who wheatpasted near the […]

Behind the Scenes: The Date Farmers – “Medicine Crow” Print

We recently saw some behind the scenes photos of the making of The Date Farmers’ newest print “Medicine Crow” from Modern Multiples. If the image looks familiar to you, it’s probably because you saw it at their most recent exhibition, “Strange Fruit,” currently showing at FIFTY24SF. Sounds like there are three colorways so far – “Watermelon,” “Cotton Candy” and “Southwest.” Take a look at the photo set after the jump.

Openings: Date Farmers – “Strange Fruit” @ Fifty24SF

Growing up outside Los Angeles, we would find ourselves, once every couple years or so, visiting historic downtown.  Whether checking out the Bradbury building, Union Station or Chinatown, we always made sure to take a stroll down the birthplace of the City of Angels, Olvera Street.  Centered around a traditional Mexican style plaza, Olvera Street is a historic hub and insight to Mexicano culture.  Featuring colorful dresses, bollero musicians, Oaxacan altars, churro carts, Sacred Hearts and bootleg Mickey Mouse shirts, the energy and spirit of […]

After exhibiting recently in Amsterdam in July, The Date Farmers are bringing the heat from from Coachella to the Bay for their show at Fifty24SF on September 3rd. Here is a video teaser for their show “Strange Fruit” opening Thursday night with the artists in attendance. For over 10 years, the Mexican-American duo have brought their working class art to the masses infusing their work with their culture and traditions. We are looking forward to more of their popular paper mache sculptures and paintings on […]
