Streets: Mark Jenkins @ Rose Beton Festival (Toulouse)

Working in Toulouse for the third Rose Beton Festival (see 2016), Mark Jenkins (interviewed) has created a duo of striking installations so far (with two more to come). Utilizing the human form, the American artist stages disconcerting urban interventions of which these first two pieces are prime examples. The first is what seems to be a girl with her face hidden by her hair hanging from a swing from the Saint Pierre bridge while the second features his signature hooded figure blending in with the statue of Pierre Goudouli at […]

Streets: Miss Van (Toulouse)

Fresh from her recent museum exhibition opening at the CAC Malaga (covered), Miss Van is back to Toulouse, the city where she started to paint, with a new mural for the Rose Beton Festival (covered). La symphonie des songes features her signature sensual female character in a dreamlike landscape playing with colourful folklore masks from various continents, transporting us from China to Latin America. Streets: Invader (Toulouse)

Last week, Invader started his first wave of public art in the city of Toulouse with some of his iconic tile-based works. Choosing an appropriate color for his video game-based characters, the French artist glued up ten different pieces in the “Pink City,” known for the pinkish terracotta bricks used in its architecture. Toulouse is the 66th city to be “invaded” by the street artist – you can see more in the photos below… Discuss Invader here.

Recap: Rose Beton Festival (Toulouse)

Curated by Tilt, the second edition of the Rose Beton Festival in Toulouse (FR) paid tribute to the graffiti scene. The festival kicked off with an exhibition at Chateau d’Eau featuring the iconic photographs by Martha Cooper  & Henry Chalfont (interviewed) as well as emerging photographer Sylvain Fargot. The Musee des Abattoirs is then taken over with installations by Boris Tellegen (covered), Mist, and Craig Costello while Tilt brought back his Voyage Retour car installation that he created during his recent residency at Jardin Rouge in Marrakech. Legendary  Futura painted over […]

Showing: Boris “Delta” Tellegan @ Rose Beton Festival

With the focus of the Rose Beton Festival in Toulouse this year on graffiti, artists Craig Costello, Futura, Mist, Tilt, and Boris Tellegen were asked to create installations at the Musee des Abattoirs in an exhibition entitled EPOXY. For his part, Tellegen (otherwise known as DELTA), contributed a sculpture, small painting and associated wall mural for the event. The highlight of course was the robot like sculpture, created in the architecturally-informed abstract style the Dutch artist perfected on the streets of Amsterdam. Discuss Boris “Delta” Tellegen here.

Openings: “Subcultures” @ Espace Croix Baragnon (Toulouse)

The museum L’espace Croix Baragnon in Toulouse is celebrating the underground cultural scene with a new exhibition called Subcultures. The city of Toulouse is the cradle from which many renowned artists like Miss Van, Fafi, Reso, Tilt to draw came, but the artistic scene is even more prolific, mixing popular cultures (rock music, punk, goth, hip hop, experimental … sci-fi, comics, movies, skateboarding, tattoo…) revisiting modern art movements (surrealism, Dadaism, pop art, poster-art…) as well as post-modern art forms (lowbrow, graffiti, street art…). Curator David Pujol has been observing […]

For this new episode of Mister Freeze – Nite & Day, street and graffiti artists are playing on both […]
