Recap: Gary Baseman – “Happy Toby To You” @ Time Square Hong Kong

Continuing to spread his pervasive imagery to Asia (also see Shanghai & Taipei), Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) recent project saw him celebrating his iconic Toby character’s 10th birthday in Hong Kong. Held at the busy Time Square complex in Causeway Bay, the installation (arranged by LeBasse Projects) featured a dinner party for his faithful companion as well as photo exhibition of their travels together. Releases: Ron English – “Temporal Boxing Brain”

Earlier this month, Ron English (featured) intruded something new produced by ToyQube entitled Temporal Boxing Brain. Based on one of the NY-based artist’s paintings, the sculptural release is a good example of his wit as well as penchant for creative remixing of common items and pop culture. Releases: Bom.K – “Aérotik Malpa”

French artist Bom.K, member of the infamous DMV crew, recently finished working on his first edition of Aérotik sculptures. These collectible figures are entirely handmade by the artist himself, from its conception, creation to packaging. These characters have been present in BomK’s work for years, as a result of the spray paint fumes, representing an alchemy between the curves of the female body and the cold technicality of the aerosol. After their appearances on walls, canvases and paper, this is the first time they are appearing in 3D form, featuring all the recognizable elements of his haunting work. Releases: James Jean – “Leonardo” Figure

For those that didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas, perhaps you might consider picking up the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figure released by Good Smile. Created based off the imagery of James Jean (interviewed), Leonardo will be the first of the crime-fighting pizza lovers to be made available for pre-order. The other three will be released separately through 2015 with collectors who purchase all for receiving an exclusive limited edition aluminum art print from Jean. Via Toysrevil. Releases: James Jean – TMNT Figures

Going back to his comic book roots, James Jean (interviewed) revealed a project over the weekend at New York Comic Con that he has been working on with Good Smile. The Japanese manufacturer of hobby products is teaming up with Nickelodeon and Jean to create new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures based on his illustrations. Pre-orders will start up in November beginning with Leonardo, with the remaining three set to be released in next year. Via Hypebeast. Discuss James Jean here.

Based off two of his complimentary paintings The Hermit & Migratory Soul, the two figures are already are in their protoype form. Those who have been in the vinyl art toy game for a while will no doubt remember Joe Ledbetter’s original Fire-Cat figure, one of his iconic characters. Releases: Luke Chueh – “Bitch” Figure

After introducing his collaboration with Pretty In Plastic at his last show (covered) in Los Angeles, Luke Chueh (featured) has revealed another image of his new art toy – Bitch. Like the Jack sculpture seen in that exhibition, this latest figure is based on a sculpt from Pretty In Plastic, and in this instance will be produced by Munky King. Showing: “This Is Not A Toy” @ Design Exchange

Currently showing at the Design Exchange in Toronto is a show curated by Pharrell Williams entitled This Is Not A Toy. An avid collector himself, the American singer, songwriter, and producer has lent his expertise to the exhibition dedicated to the rise of the “art toy.” As referenced in the title of the show, the Canadian museum seeks to examine the fine line between art and design object.
