Currently showing at William Baczek Fine Arts through June 2nd is The Secret Pet Society from NY-based painter Travis Louie (interviewed). The new body of work for this Northampton, Massachusetts exhibition focuses in on people and their strange pets, an angle that Travis has explored before. Included are floating creatures, monsters, insects, huge frogs among other bizarre characters, and suffice it to say, some of the owners are not that normal themselves. All the pieces are beautifully executed in his distinctive “vintage-surreal” black and white style. […]

Following up on a showing in Seattle and Los Angeles last year, Travis Louie (interviewed) will continue exploring the idea of his Victorian friends and their unusual pets with a solo in Northampton, Massachusetts. The Secret Pet Society will open on May 2nd at William Baczek Fine Arts and will feature Travis’ distinctive and surreal way of painting his own interpretation of vintage photography. Combine one of the most respected print production companies out there with an artist whose attention to detail is well-documented and the outcome of their collaboration is almost per-ordained to be incredible. Last Friday, Exhibit A opened up its gallery doors to a multitude of artists all paying tribute to the legendary heavy metal band Metallica. Titled Obey Your Master, the exhibit featured artists such as Shepard Fairey, Travis Louie, David Stoupakis, Nicola Verlato, Brian Viveros, and Richard Villa III just to name a few. Just over the weekend, the Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles unveiled a series of portraits from Travis Louie (interviewed) painted in his signature style and amazing detail to reproduce the look of vintage B&W photographs. Continuing to expand his narrative of pets and their owners, Curious Pets featured unlikely pairings and imaginative creatures all with their own backstories written out by the NY-based artist.
