Openings: Yayoi Kusama Retrospective @ The Whitney Museum

A couple nights ago, AM was able to stop by the Whitney Museum in New York to attend the opening of the Yayoi Kusama solo exhibition. The traveling retrospective, which was recently shown at the Tate Modern in London (covered), features a diverse selection of her work from the 1940s through the present including traditional Japanese paintings, her canvases utilizing repeating motifs of dots and nets, furniture bristling with soft-sculpture phalluses, her polka-dot-painted pumpkins, whole room light installations, and more. One of the featured artists at Art Hong Kong this year was Yayoi Kusama. Her revolutionary style of dots and environmental immersion has received distinction from both Western and Asian art institutions. Preview: Yayoi Kusama x Louis Vuitton Pop-Up Stores

It looks like Louis Vuitton is going all in with their new Infinitely Kusama collaborative line with Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama. The French fashion house is planning seven special pop-up shops around the globe decorated with Kusama’s signature dot motif as well as her pumpkin sculptures to match her inspired clothing and products. The first store will open in New York on July 10th, two days before Kusama’s touring retrospective opens at the Whitney Museum. Releases: Yayoi Kusama x Louis Vuitton – “Infinitely Kusama”

Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama’s collaboration with French fashion house Louis Vuitton was recently revealed in a series of photographs. Entitled Infinitely Kusama, the line will feature her signature dots & color motif covering garments, bags, jewelry and shoes. Scheduled for a July 10th release, devoted fans can do some shopping before heading to her retrospective at the Whitney Museum which opens two days later on July 12th. Rewind: May 21 – May 27

Currently showing at Fondation Beyeler is the first exhibition ever devoted by a Swiss museum to American artist Jeff Koons. The show runs until September 2, 2012 and features a focus on three bodies of works: The New, Banality, and Celebration.
