Openings: LeBasse Projects “Go East” NYC Pop-Up Show

AM stopped by last week to check out the Culver City based LeBasse Projects and the art that traveled to New York for their “Pop Up” show.  Only in town for less than a week, “Go East” showcased the work of Yoskay Yamamoto (featured and seen above), Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune (interviewed), Mia (interviewed), and Nate Frizzell (featured). Judging from what we saw, we look forward to the next trip east from this group of fresh young artists. More pics after […]

Studio Visits: Yoskay Yamamoto

We stopped by recently to visit with Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) and to take a look at some of the pieces he’s been working for the “Go East” pop up show (Nov. 5-7, 1-6pm) this week in New York. Combine the images here with what you saw him working on during the “Reverse Studio Visit” at Baby Tattooville and you will get a pretty good idea of what to expect from the show which also includes Tessar Lo, Edwin Ushiro, Joao Ruas, Eric Fortune (interviewed), Mia […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Sketches

As if the free giveaways, raffles and live paintings weren’t enough, Baby Tattooville actively encourages their artists to sketch away in the dozens of sketchbooks brought by the paying attendees. This year, AM got a chance to sit down with virtually every participating artist, as well as a few special guests. Check out the artists at work and some of the sketches we and other attendees received after the jump.

Baby Tattooville ’09: Yoskay Yamamoto Reverse Studio Visit

Amidst all the releases, events and activities that took place during Baby Tattooville ’09, the one event that really provided true insight into the technical and creative processes of the participating artists was the organized Reverse Studio Visits.  For their visits, the artists (in this case Yoskay Yamamoto, Audrey Kawasaki, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Miss Mindy and Elizabeth McGrath) brought in-process works with them to BT ’09, spending an hour each painting and providing a behind the scenes peek at how they work in their studios.  […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Art Jam

If the artists at Baby Tattooville are the heart of the event, then the “Art Jam” is definitely the bloodline that is pumping throughout the event. Starting at 5pm on the opening day and lasting a little past 8pm the next night, “Art Jam” is a culmination of the all the participating artist’s hard work. Like in previous years, the blank canvas was tinkered with by a few brave artists during the initial dinner, but by the time midnight rolled around, one could clearly see […]

Baby Tattooville ’09: Curious Art Sale

During each annual Baby Tattooville, artists produce exclusive artwork for an all-one-print that includes each and every piece.  The original artwork that is used for that print is available first to attendees of the event, then if any pieces are still available, the public will have a chance to buy.  The order in which those lucky BT-goers receive the opportunity to purchase is based on their ticket number (those who were the first to register get lower numbers).  It is a wonderful opportunity to skip […]

Baby Tattooville ‘09: “Son Of Baby Tattooville” Museum Reception

After a successful exhibition last year (“Beyond Baby Tattooville”), the Riverside Art Museum brings back Baby Tattooville with this year’s roster of artists, with a show called “Son of Baby Tattooville”.  It was a unique museum group show in that almost all the artists who had works in the show made it in person to the opening.  Museum-goers were greeted with highly-representational pieces by each artists, such as Audrey Kawasaki‘s classic Two Sisters. More images after the jump…

Countdown to Baby Tattooville: Yoskay Yamamoto & Liz McGrath

T-Minus 2 days til the doors open on Baby Tattooville 2009 and we were able to get you sneak peeks from two more artists which are going to be a part of this weekend extravaganza. First up is Liz McGrath, a lady with a talent for finding the beauty in the “grotesqueness” of life. Where we see a dark street corner with unsavory creatures of the night, she sees an alternate perspective where imagination and craftsmanship brings to light artistic gems. Above is her work […]

Video: Yoskay Yamamoto Interview for Scion “Self-Portraits” Exhibition

We are looking forward to Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) taking part in a New York show sometime in November.  We’ll have more on that later, but for now, check out this nice little interview he did in regards to the Scion Installation Tour (covered) that finally hit its last stop in Los Angeles.  He talked about his piece for the show as well as how he got started on the gallery circuit, among other things.  You can bid on Yoskay’s “Self Portrait” here if you are […]

Baby Tattooville 2009 Lineup Confirmed

For those of you wondering who the last mystery artist for this year’s Baby Tattooville (BT) is, we are happy say we have been told that it will be none other than Greg “Craola” Simkins (interviewed)!  For the uninitiated, BT is an annual artist – fan/collector retreat put on at Riverside, CA’s historic Mission Inn.  Each year, there are usually ten featured artists who will interact with fans in many ways including panels, demonstrations, live painting, sketching, etc…  If you are curious how last year’s […]
