As we mentioned last week, we recently had the chance to stop by Brian Viveros’ Riverside studio for a visit to talk to him about a show we had been looking forward to for a while now. “The Dirtyland” opens this Saturday night (note that it’s not the usual Friday opening) at Thinkspace Gallery and will be a comprehensive exhibition of Brian’s artistic vision. The artist, based in the beautiful IE, is known for his smoking hot girls, often battered and bruised, but still maintaining a fierce defiance and strength at the same time. And, the helmets, what can we say about the helmets?
For this show at the spacious new gallery location, Brian is excited to be able to display all facets of his creative ability. From paintings ranging small to large, different mediums like drawings, hand finished screenprints, originals, sculptures, and video (he is a surrealistic filmmaker – check out his film “Dislandia”), to a immersive installation of DirtyTroops, you will not be disappointed if you head over to Culver City this Saturday, October 2nd.
Let’s take a look at what we have to look forward to shall we? All after the jump…
As you can see, Brian has a fascination with head gear. For this show, he has samurai helmets, matador head pieces, viking helms, even star wars inspired head gear. Also repeated throughout his paintings is his the ubiquitous cigarette or cigar, not just inhaled but attached to shoulder straps like bullets or whole packs of cigs attached on arm straps – like on the DirtyTroops!
Check out these dope customized mannequins below, hand-detailed by long time friend Mr. Gustavo Ponce – bringing Brian’s vision of the DirtyTroops to life. Many thanks from Brian for that. For more info on Gustavo Ponce and his amazing sculptures please check out his website at www.gustavoponce.com
Also, for our loyal readers – Brian has signed a showcard for those of you unable to attend. Just leave a comment below and we will be sending one of these out to a lucky winner (chosen randomly).
