Last week at their Central Hong Kong space, Gagosian Gallery opened an exhibition of work from New York-based contemporary artist Richard Prince. Timed perfectly to coincide with Art HK ’11, the exhibition marked the first solo effort in Asia for the famed photographer, painter, and mixed media artist. In a similar fashion to that of his recent Paris exhibition, this body of work presented a wide range of Prince’s repertoire, focusing on his various Untitled photographs series, as well as his Nurse overpaintings and his “rephotographs”, which drive to the core of the re-appropriation the ubiquitous icon has come be be revered – and at times persecuted – for. Chronicling such signature themes of luxury, celebrity, fantasy, and sexuality, the exhibition undoubtedly served as the perfect introduction to one of the preeminent contemporary art figures of his generation for the Asian market.
