Teaser: Affordable Art Fair (Los Angeles)

For the younger collectors out there in Los Angeles, there is good news as the Affordable Art Fair will be in town from January 18th – 22nd for their debut showing. Held on the event deck at L.A. Live, the goal is to present contemporary art priced from $100 – $10,000, with half of the work under $5,000. Art Focus: Jose Luis Carranza

The artist we have chosen to share with you for this week’s Art Focus is Jose Luis Carranza. The Peruvian figurative painter trained at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Peru where he received education on classical techniques and then moved on to Europe to further learn from studying works of the old European masters. His portraiture features a striking wide-eyed gaze, bold use of color, thick brushstrokes, and references to both biblical and Incan symbols. Liliwenn is a photorealistic street muralist from France (and founder of the Crimes of Mind project) whom we have featured briefly here on AM in the past. She recently collaborated with ASM (A State of Mind) on their entertaining new music video for Splice the Mainbrace, where she is featured as a street artist on the run from the law. Showing: Maurizio Cattelan – “All” @ the Guggenheim (NY)

Currently on show at the Guggenheim in New York until January 22nd is a can’t-be-missed retrospective from Maurizo Cattelan. The awe-inspiring installation features virtually everything the artist has produced since 1989, all displayed dangling on ropes in a gravity-defying presentation the museum’s rotunda. Basel Week Miami ’11: Mark Moore Gallery @ PULSE

One of our favorite booths this year during Art Basel Week in Miami was from the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles. Some of the works featured included the intricate wood works from Kenichi Yokono, the thick and textured paintings from Allison Schulnik (whose video we just shared with you yesterday), the kinetic stylings of Andrew Schoultz, the crowd shot watercolors from David Rathman, and the hyperrealistic portraits from Yigel Ozeri.
