Preview: Bonhams Urban Art Auction

Tonight in London, the Bonhams Urban Art Auction will be getting underway. With the pieces that are made available for bidding and the results of great interest to collectors out there, all eyes will be on the lots up for sale including many familiar names and some new ones. For our West Coast readers who looked with jealous eyes across the country to the George Condo retrospective (covered) hosted at the New Museum last year, now comes your opportunity. The PRISM Gallery has assembled the first extensive exhibition of George Condo’s work in Los Angeles with a selection of paintings, drawings and sculptures across a wide span of his career with special emphasis on the portrait-style work of the last decade. Tomorrow, March 29th, at the Londonewcastle Project Space, a special one night only showing of an installation from INSA will be opening its doors to the public. Last Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in the heart of LA’s Chinatown hosted a new solo show from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Jokes On Me… was a sculptural extravaganza with some of Yoskay’s favorite toys customized (utilizing plaster, resin, vinyl, clay and wood) with his signature facial expressions and other modifications. Last Friday, Ivory & Black in London celebrated their grand opening with a show from New York-based Cheryl Dunn of Beautiful Losers’ fame. The acclaimed filmmaker and photographer has made a career of documenting urban and youth culture spanning a wide expanse of subjects such as skaters, the homeless, musicians, graffiti, artists, and their processes. Opening alongside Victor Castillo last month at Jonathan LeVine was Los Angeles-based artist Alex Gross (interviewed). Entitled Product Placement, the show presented a new series of paintings that expands on the themes from his prior work such as Consumption, Branding, Celebrity, Love and Mortality. Using refined strokes and techniques, Gross skillfully rendered mundane objects and mixed them into a world where luxury brands are the common focus of his alluring subjects.
