Last month, the Above Second Gallery in Hong Kong played host to Japanese artist Tat Ito a selection of his paintings. Shinagawa Shinju featured the NY-based artists riff on storytellers of Japanese rakugo, a form of verbal entertainment based on comical monologues about ordinary lives. Ito’s imagery is well suited for the subject matter as the miniature characters in his work are often involved in humorous situations in the rich background tapestry of his world.
