Coming up on September 13th, the Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York will be welcoming Japanese artist Mr. in for a new solo show entitled Metamorphosis – Give Me Your Wings. Not only will the former protégé of Takashi Murakami be exhibiting his latest series of paintings, he will also be presenting a large installation in the middle of the main gallery that reflects on the catastrophic nuclear disaster in his country, voicing the post-traumatic anxiety and frustration of his people. This installation, which represents a more serious artistic direction from the artist known for his celebration of the otaku subculture, will be built from a seemingly random assortment of rubbish and ordinary objects representing Japanese life, echoing the massive debris seen in the aftermath of the tsunami.
