Openings: COPE2 – “Hypnotic” @ Gallery 69

Bronx bomber and graff artist COPE2 continued his indoor showcases with a show at Gallery 69 in New York. Entitled Hypnotic, this exhibition is another step in the evolution of his signature bubble throw ups and wildstyle compositions. Cope2 worked layers upon layers of abstraction on this fresh series of canvases showing a nice change of pace from the works we’ve been used to seeing from his street works. Check it all out below. Over the weekend at the Art13 art fair in London, the Circle Culture Gallery featured some paintings from Katrin Fridriks at their booth in the Olympia Grand Hall. The new works consisted of pieces with vibrant splashes of colors as well as abstract monochromatic offerings. Take a look at more detailed images below… Discuss Katrin Fridriks here.

Streets: Liqen (Ecuador)

Mexican artist Liqen recently headed south to spend some time on the Ecuadorian Pacific coast.  Besides enjoying some good food, the street muralist did some birdwatching and sketching different species of these winged creatures. Inspired by the experience, he recently painted this wood building in Esmeraldas although some of the things he painted may be from his impressive imagination. More detailed photos below… Discuss Liqen here.

Overtime: Feb 25 – March 3

More stories from the week that ended March 3: Morgan Library & Museum to host “Subliming Vessel: The Drawings of Matthew Barney” show opening in May. Four hundred fragments of bricks from Babylon’s Ishtar Gate and Processional Way have been stolen in Iraq. Fired Margarita Aguilar suing El Museo del Barrio claiming gender discrimination and a hostile workplace. Prime minister Cameron criticized after he opposed calls to return Parthenon Marbles & Koh-i-Noor diamond. San Francisco’s Fine Arts Museums fires another staff member as exhibition designer […]

Mark Drew – “Deez Nuts” @ China Heights Gallery

Aussie artist Mark Drew, co-founder of the China Heights Gallery, recently held a solo exhibition at the Sydney showspace entitled Deez Nuts. The premise behind this new body of work (which started as a zine of the same name) was his genius decision to meld Peanuts comic imagery with classic rap lyrics combining some of his childhood obsessions. Rounding out the show was a reproduction Snoopy’s doghouse but modified with multiple Snoop Dogg references. Tipped off by My Modern Met. Photos via the artist. Discuss […]

Art Focus: Patricia Piccinini

Our eyes were recently drawn to the work of Patricia Piccinini with a sculpture that is currently part of a group show (How To Tell The Future From The Past) at Haunch of Venison New York. Entitled The Carrier, the hyper-realistic piece from the multidisciplinary artist makes the viewer almost think it is real if not for the fantastical creature that is holding an elderly woman on its back. Take a look at more detailed photos below… Via Designboom. Discuss Patricia Piccinini here.

Streets: JR (New York)

Last week, JR spent part of his birthday doing what he loves best – getting up on the streets. For this unique little “inception” worthy project within a project, it looks like the French street photograffeur enlisted his friends Os Gemeos to pose for a photo on the back of a truck which then was pasted back onto said truck (seen below). On a related note, also check out the sweet gift he got from the twins here. Discuss JR here.
