A couple weeks ago, Word to Mother (interviewed) returned to San Francisco’s White Walls (see 2012) for a new solo show. Entitled California Coming Home, the London-based artist’s fresh selection of paintings incorporated Cali imagery around his signature character based on his own persona. Referring nostalgically to times past when he visited the Golden State in his childhood, the pieces express these feelings in a dream-like loose composition.
He explains – “When I first visited California it was a time in my life when things were much more simple, for me personally and for society as a whole. Technology was progressing rapidly but was yet to over complicate day to day life. People’s actions were still integral to how they were perceived by others. Nowadays people are able to create a persona online of how they would like to be seen by the rest of the world, none of which is necessarily true. These works are my reaction to the dramatically changing social environment in which I find myself.”
