Openings: “Unpredictable Gravity” @ Roq La Rue

Last week, a group show to benefit cancer charities opened up at the Roq La Rue gallery in Seattle entitled Unpredictable Gravity. Raising over 20K so far, the success of the show is due in no small part to the efforts of curator Robbie Lowery and the stellar contributions from the artists. Banksy’s “Heart Balloon” Sells for $650K to Coldplay’s Martin

One of the iconic images from Banksy’s historic artist residency on the streets of New York last year was the so called Heart Balloon (later jacked and displayed during Basel Week Miami). A variation on this piece as seen recently as a print for sale on Paddle8, but it has made a more high profile appearance over that weekend in the form of an original on wood that sold at Sean Penn’s Help Haiti Home Gala in Beverly Hills. On February 7th, Space 1026 in Philadelphia will be opening a solo show from Erin M Riley (interviewed) entitled Crimson Landslide. These new pieces from the young artist, who recently relocated to Brooklyn from Philly, will depict everyday objects and the detritus of female identity like toiletries, birth control pills, and more. The newest VICE magazine features the artwork of David Choe (featured) gracing its cover on what they refer to as their The Horse Is a Horse of Course of Course issue. If you remember, VICE was for whom Choe’s Thumbs Up! series was filmed for where the street and graffiti artist was seen hitchiking his way across North America and China. Discuss David Choe here.

For those in the UK that missed SABER’s (interviewed) show at The Outsiders in Newcastle (covered), tonight is the show has travelled to the London location of the gallery for an opening there. Two artists that we have had our eyes on for a while that were featured in some of our previous Art Focus articles, Eloy Morales (focus) & Joel Rea (focus) will be part of a group show this weekend at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Based on Actual Events also includes Alyssa Monks and Diego Koi, with all four artists showing particular skill with hyper-realism. Streets: Swoon – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part II)

In the middle of last Fall, Swoon (interviewed) was tapped as the next artist to hit the iconic Bowery & Houston mural location. We caught her working day and night (here) to get her visual language up for New Yorkers to enjoy. Utilizing her well known hand-painted paper cuts and wheatpaste collages, Swoon & her team created a beautiful mural that captured the layers of the city and its urban inhabitants.
