We last caught up with Mel Kadel back in 2012 when she presented a solo show at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. Last weekend, her works returned to the same space for another exhibition entitled Tied Up, opening on the same night as Andrew Hem’s show. In her new paintings, Kadel continues to explore, along with her recognizable character, a folksy world created by patterns and repetitive motifs. This time around, the pieces created on hand-stained paper revolve around the notion referenced to in the title of the show and features strings, ropes, and different entanglements that her semi-autobiographical character struggles through.
