Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. This results in a memorable way to keep the viewer’s attention as they run through the aisles focusing on one gallery and discovering a single artist at a time. Photo credit: AK for Arrested Motion.

This Saturday (March 15), Audrey Kawasaki (interviewed) will be releasing her next time limited edition. Entitled Maybe Tomorrow and based off a painting she exhibited during SCOPE Miami, the print will be available from 12 am (midnight) Pacific time and ends after 24 hours with the edition size determined by the amount of orders. Ian Strage aka Kid Zoom recently introduced his latest installation, Landed, for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. With its focus on architecture, this large, site-specific sculptural work follows his solo exhibitions last year at the National Gallery of Victoria (covered), and at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (covered). Over the weekend, AM stopped by Blum & Poe in Culver City to check out the new expansive exhibition from Yoshitomo Nara. The solo is the Japanese artist’s seventh with the gallery and includes a selection of new paintings, a series of large-scale bronze sculptures, and a survey in the upstairs space of drawings made over the last thirty years displayed in a chronological order. Streets: Faith47 (Capetown)

Faith47 recently took part in the #ANOTHERLIGHTUP project in Capetown, whose goal is to “fund the installation of a street light system into one of Cape Town’s more dangerous neighbourhoods and empower individuals with the potential to be active agents in change.” The Capetown-based artist contributed a new mural & installation entitled Harvest. Returning to the site of his 2010 Los Angeles solo (covered), Cleon Peterson brought his hard-hitting imagery for his currently showing exhibition at New Image Art entitled End of Days. The collection of paintings feature a limited palette of black & white or black & red, making the brutal details all the more evident when rendered in a uniform color scheme. Releases: Josh Keyes x Tiny Showcase – “The Hermit” & “Migratory Soul” Prints

Currently until Tuesday, March 11th, Tiny Showcase will have two prints available for purchase individually or as a set from Josh Keyes (interviewed). Although the originals were painted for different shows, the two pieces seemed destined to end up together due to their synchronous imagery. Ahead of their upcoming exhibition opening on March 12th at the legendary patisserie and gallery, Maison Bertaux, in Soho, London, we met up with the all girl collective HYSTERIA in their Hastings studio. Made up of Collagism, Aida Wilde and Shuby, the UK based collective creates colourful artworks featuring eggs, legs, bananas, bunnies, cats, cupcakes, jewellery and bold iconography using mixed media collage and screenprinting techniques.
