We stopped Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles earlier this week to see the solo from Edwin Ushiro (interviewed) who had a wonderful series of drawings on display made from ballpoint pen, markers, pens, color pencils and graphite. Perhaps it’s the translucent paper used for these new pieces, but the translucent and ethereal look draws the viewer in for a second look to try and decipher how the Los Angeles-based artist achieves the effect. This transparency and glowing look would have been familiar to fans of his larger paintings, a testament to Ushiro’s skills with the way this is mirrored in these smaller scale pieces and the different tools used. The Study of Life as Things featured a nostalgic look back on his intermediate school days in Hawaii which also features some recreated basketball cards from the era.
