Tonight at New Image Art in Los Angeles, the Thrill Of Victory And The Agony Of Defeat: Sports In Contemporary Art group show will be opening. Curated by Patrick Martinez, the exhibition will feature a diverse range of sculpture, drawings, paintings, and photography from him as well as Gregory Bojorquez, Hiro Kurata, Mark Mulroney, Shizu Saldamando, Patrick Martinez, Andrew Schoultz, Vincent Valdez, and Mario Ybarra Jr. The chosen theme highlights parallels between sports and the pursuit of artistic endeavors, such as the drive, talent, and passion needed for success. Appropriately, opening night will include a free viewing of the much anticipated pay-per-view fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez.
To give you a taste of what to expect, here is a look at a clever new series of works that Martinez has been developing for the show. The paintings are a play on the Pee Chee Folders of the ’70s and ’80s, most likely used by most of us as children, that depict high school-age students engaged in sports or other activities. His version features a contemporary and sardonic twist where imagery featuring police brutality is remixed in along with portraits of victims we have all seen in the news.
