Showing concurrently with Glenn Barr’s upcoming solo at Jonathan LeVine Gallery starting October 15th will be an exhibition from Masakatsu Sashie entitled External Effect. The Japanese artist’s work is influenced by the concept of “the balanced aquarium,” described by Nobel Prize winner Konrad Lorenz in his book King Solomon’s Ring: New Light on Animal Ways. Sashie sees parallels between the self-sustaining environment of the fish tank with the world we live in now where we are struggling to maintain stability in our lives while surrounded by consumerism, globalism and environmentalism. These thoughts manifest themselves in his signature self-contained environments, floating orbs of industrially manufactured products hovering over desolate cities.
