Over the weekend, Soey Milk premiered Inflorescence, her second solo show (see 2015) to date with Corey Helford Gallery. The collection of over 20 paintings and drawings highlighted significant moments in Milk’s life. Those who attended the premiere may have felt a sense of familiarity with some of the crowd. This should not come as a surprise as the new body of work included portraits of many of her friends as well as herself.
During a recent interview, she further explained – “If I’m working on the background or the weaving of the background and the figure of a particular painting, I have to love the relationship the figure has with the chaotic, abstracted mass that I’m painting. So naturally, if I’m painting a figure, it doesn’t matter how talented they are at being a model—it matters how well I know them. How much I love them.” You can see the rest of this excellent Juxtapoz interview here.
The Word of Emotion, a favorite from the recent show, is now available as a print but sales will close on 9/15 noon PST. For more details, check here.
